Free agency doesn’t officially start until tomorrow at 4PM, but we’ve seen several marquee players agree to deals with new teams and get paid that paper and it’s a lot of paper that they’re getting. Good for those guys getting theirs. To the teams that are doing all the signings, I’m sure it’ll all work out for them and they won’t be releasing their new signed players in 2-3 years.

The Dolphins, they’ve gone with a different approach to free agency as opposed to many other teams this offseason, which is a much different approach to several other offseasons. If you were going to sum up the Dolphin’s free agent philosophy in one word, that word would be, in your best George Costanza voice, would be nothing. Nothing is what the Dolphins are doing and I for one am all for it. To many times the Dolphins have thrown money around to guys only for those guys to never even come close to living up to their contract. The obvious ones come to mind like Mike Wallace, Suh, Ellerbe, Jake Grove, Marc Columbo and Mario Williams. Sadly, there are many more that could be added. So, when I see the Dolphins just sitting back putting their feet up while other teams are throwing money around like they just don’t care, I get a little bit of satisfaction thinking that the Dolphins might no something that we all don’t. That maybe they know that this current Dolphin’s roster isn’t winning anything next year regardless of how much money they use. That maybe just maybe, the best way to build a consistent winner is by doing your due diligence and outsmarting your opponents at the NFL Draft instead of just acquiring big names with a stroke of a pen.

Yeah, the Dolphins lost some key pieces such as Gore and James, but honestly, as much as I enjoyed Frank Gore’s ageless assault on moving up on the all time rushing lists, the Dolphins can live without him. As for James, I wouldn’t of hated if Miami kept him, and I know it means that they lost another guy that they drafted who played solidly, but I can live without all his false start penalties and times where he just gets whipped. What I’m saying is that I don’t think James is worth the contract he got from Denver.

Now Miami will add some low key, non-expensive guys within the next few days, but I highly doubt they will go after the biggest fish. This goes in-line with the tanking rebuilding approach that the new regime is instilling. Will it be tough during the season when the Dolphins look bad, yes, yes it will. But I believe the juice is worth the squeeze and Miami not being associated with any more terrible contracts is a nice feeling for once.
