As a writer, I have a responsibility to the readers to be objective when I need to be. However, as a fan, I can be as subjective as I need to be as well. Make no mistake about it, I am a Dallas Cowboys fan. I don’t shout Super Bowl every season, but I’m a fan nonetheless. Which leads me to the topic at hand. I love Zeke as a player, but I love him more as an individual. Don’t get me wrong. Sports are great. It’s why I’m talking to you guys right now. But they’re not more important than life itself. Zeke, you need to wake up my friend.

Off The Field Recap

Ezekiel Elliott has been no stranger to off-field incidents in his short NFL career. That’s not something that anyone should be saying in regards to a player entering his fourth year. Prior to the start of his rookie season, Zeke made a trip to a marijuana dispensary in Seattle. I forgot all about that one. Athletes in any major team sports organization in the U.S. aren’t allowed to smoke weed. I’m just spit-balling here, but he probably shouldn’t have been there.

Back in January of 2017, he was involved in a car accident right before their playoff game. One might say that’s nothing. Anyone can have an accident at any given time. That’s true, but Elliott was also involved in a single-car accident while he was in college. That was coupled with him driving with a suspended license. Then there was the St. Patrick’s Day Parade when he lifted a woman’s shirt to flash the crowd and the domestic violence case. While the NFL’s own investigator discredited the accuser, the league still suspended Elliott for six games during the 2017 season. Fair or not, it still happened and has to be included.

Most recently, Zeke was handcuffed at the EDC music festival in Las Vegas. He was seen impeding a woman from walking away during what seems to be a heated discussion. Although it should be noted that he didn’t put his hands on her. But what got him arrested was the fact that he knocked down a security officer who was just doing his job. From the video, you can definitely tell that alcohol was involved. Even more of a reason for him to wake up.

What He Needs To Wake Up

Honestly, I’m an advocate of him being suspended for the first two games of the season. He needs some accountability. It’s also not outside of the realm of possibility that the NFL could suspend him for “conduct unbecoming.” Zeke also needs true friends around him who will tell him what he needs to hear as supposed to what he wants to hear. He’s old enough to know that there are certain things he probably shouldn’t do. As a running back in the NFL entering his fourth season, he’s basically a veteran now. He has to do better.

These changes need to happen not just for professional reasons but for personal ones as well. We all know what severe drinking can lead to. I don’t need to get into that. Elliott has shown us to be reckless in his personal life, and he better get a handle on that very soon. It’s not just about football, Zeke. It’s time to wake up.
