You read the title correctly. The NBA is looking to remove the term owner from its vocabulary. Why? They feel that it is racially insensitive to refer to the one who writes the checks as the owner of a team that is more than 80% black. Let’s dig a little deeper.

Owner Is Offensive?

This sudden need to change the word can’t be directly pinned to any one person or incident. However NBA Owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, Steve Balmer, decided to change his title to team chairman last year. The owners of the Philadelphia 76ers are called Managing Partners and Limited Partners. While the Board of Governors is the term used for the owners of the Golden State Warriors. Speaking of the Warriors, Draymond Green was shown voicing his disdain for the term owner on an episode of LeBron James’ series on HBO, The Shop.

As previously mentioned, there are those around the league and the country who feel that the term owner reminds people of the days of slavery when slave-owners terrorized black people. They now feel that owner is just as offensive as the n-word. No, I can’t believe we’re having this conversation either, but here we are. With the continuous rise of SJW’s (social justice warriors), matters such as this are only going to continue to grow and get more ridiculous.

The Reality Of It All

There is nothing wrong with players being active when it comes to social issues. Let’s be honest, we all have a duty to enlighten others of social injustice when it is warranted. I just believe that removing the term owner isn’t the way to go. Owner has never been viewed as negative until recently. There are those of us who inspire to be homeowners or owners of our own businesses. Heck, the owner of the Charlotte Hornets is black. Maybe we should ask Michael Jordan what he thinks of all of this. Jordan has a history of dodging social issues, so that’s probably not going to happen.

NBA Owner

I also find it a bit ironic that players who refer to themselves as n-words are so easily offended by the term owner. Sure, they drop the hard e-r at the end and add the a, but it’s still the same word. They still don’t want white people using it even if it’s all they hear from certain music and the players themselves.

Just to show that I’m not being too harsh about the situation, I’ve even referred to myself as being a slave when it comes to my place of employment. It was in a joking manner, but slaves don’t get paid. They especially don’t get paid millions of dollars to play what is widely regarded as a “kid’s game“. It’s time for people to lighten up and stop looking for issues where there are none. If not, the SJW’s will keep winning while we the fans will keep losing.
