The US women’s soccer team defeated Netherlands 2-0 to capture back to back titles! It has never been done before on the women’s side and only once on the Men’s side, but you would have to go back to the 1934 and 1938 years when the Italian men did it. It Is an accomplishment that should not be brushed aside in the sports world and brought to the top. The USA Women’s World Cup Champs dominated today with the win.

What this women’s team did this year is brought women all over together by using their platform to stand up for women’s rights and not hold anything back. They were criticized for scoring 13 goals over Thailand which brought some to question their sportsmanship. My feelings were that the women were facing the best competition in the world and if they scored 40, well so be it! Besides isn’t the purpose who scores the most goals wins?

For me, it is a little more special, and some other parents may agree. Being the father of two young girls, Bella 9 and Lucia 8, this win gives more meaning to when I say “Yes you can”. Being a divorced dad, I do not get to see them every day but I recently moved closer so I could be more involved, but even when I was further, I made sure I was in the front row for gymnastics, swimming and any other event they were involved in. When they would want to give up on something, I would pop a YouTube video of Shannon Miller or Simone Biles in gymnastics and give them a hero to look up to. Now I can say” Hey look at Megan Rapinoe, she and her team did it and so can you!”

Little girls need heroes too! We look at the everyday sports and think Lebron or Michael Jordan, guys who are top notch, but girls need theirs too. A role model, someone who fights for women’s rights, equality and the same pay as men. This trophy was more than being the best in the world.

This trophy was for every woman who has been looked down, every little girl that is kicking a soccer ball in her back yard and knowing there is a chance for me too! I will work hard, speak my mind and be the best that I can be because I am strong and good enough to succeed! The USA Women’s World Cup Champs did it.

Meghan Rapinoe has been using her platform to voice her opinions, and the world has listened! A lot of people really didn’t know who she was until she spoke up about not going to the White House, which many athletes and teams have declined. It is her choice and maybe being a woman, she received a lot more backlash than most. She was quoted as saying “I think that I’m particularly, uniquely and very deeply American,” she said. “If we want to talk about the ideals that we stand for, the song and the anthem, and what we were founded on, I think I’m extremely American.”

The US team got a lot of support on Twitter today after their victory. 2019 Women’s World Cup Champs.

Congrats to the 2019 Women’s World Cup Champions! You won the world’s Heart!
