I told myself years ago, if I had the opportunity to write an article for fantasy football, I would start with the question that I am constantly asked…. When is the best time to take a QB in Fantasy Football? No matter how many times I am asked, how many times I answer the question, the complete opposite is done by the person asking the question.

Selecting a Quarterback all depends on your league. Size? Are the points higher than most for the Quarterbacks than other leagues? Is it 6 points for a touchdown or 4 points? Is it a two Quarterback league or one? In two QB leagues, I will admit getting your two definitely take your quarterbacks early because they will fly off the board and you could be stuck with.

For sake of argument lets use the simple points system most sites use:

  • Passing Yards: 1 point per 25 yards.
  • Passing Touchdowns: 4 points.
  • Passing Interceptions: -2 points.
  • Rushing Yards: 1 point per 10 yards.
  • Rushing Touchdowns: 6 points.

1 simple answer…WAIT, WAIT, WAIT! Most guys want that sexy pick, this year obviously Mahomes

Last year I won three leagues out of four by waiting. In one league I have won six of the last 10 years by waiting. Over the last 20 years, it has been part of my drafting strategy.

I won leagues with two mediocre names at that time. I drafted Jameis Winston in the 10th round and Baker Mayfield I got in free agency. Now, look at those names? They were not on many peoples draft boards as their number one quarterback. A number two at best, but these two guys worked as #1’s and had a great supporting cast. The stat line I use is 200 yards and 2 touchdowns a week. If they can run the ball even better!

Let’s look at this years 2019 ADP by what is going on in Best Ball Drafts since those are the only leagues drafting right now. For those who do not know, Best Ball League rules are you Draft an 18-player team and you’re done. Each week, your top scoring players automatically start and will count toward your season total. The team with the most points at the end of the season wins. No setting your lineup, No waivers, and No trades.

Let’s play would you rather! Let’s use a 12-man-sized league PPR since that’s where most leagues have gone to.

Would You Rather have….

Patrick Mahomes Round :4 Pick:05 or Robert Woods Round:4 Pick:08

Now I am sure by looking at this your thinking Mahomes all day! For me when I break it down, I feel there is no way Mahomes hits 50 touchdowns again, it is a very hard thing to do and has never been done before. Robert Woods has been a safe constant Wide Receiver 2 even maybe a 1. With Sean Mcveys system and Goff producing, Woods shows plenty of upside. At round four you may already have two running backs and a Wideout. I would rather build my core, who even knows what is happening with Tyreek Hill that could be a huge factor in Mahomes success.

Andrew Luck Round :6 Pick :13 or Tevin Coleman Round:6 Pick:11

Again, another QB where it may look like a must-have! Round 6 is a good spot for Luck if you have all your other pieces! His Offense is the talk of the offseason adding some studs to help out. To me, Tevin Coleman is the value pick here. Coleman is playing with Kyle Shannahan again who drafted Coleman in Atlanta and used him successfully all over the field Oh and yes loves to run the football! I think Coleman can be easily a number two back and help on bye weeks. If it pans out possibly a number one. It is a heavy backfield but Coleman has plenty of upside and a relationship with Kyle Shanahan.

Aaron Rodgers Round :7 Pick :10 or Courtland Sutton R:7 P:12

Now I have to admit, 7th round for Rodgers I may have to bite, but I can’t! I have to stick to what has always worked for me. Rodgers easily looks good as the pick here on paper. I think we are forgetting something; he has a new coach who he knows nothing about and could throw a tantrum. Rodgers has shown he can blow up a team or a coach at any time. Cortland Sutton, on the other hand, is a high upside guy! Has Flacco now who wants to throw the football! Emanuel Sanders is dealing with a serious Achilles injury which is hard to fight back at an older age. For me, I would take Sutton as my 3rd Wide receiver at this point or flex. What do you have to lose in having a good wide out over a QB who is a head case.

Now that your roster is stacked, let’s see what the 10th round and later looks like:

Goff, JaredRound :10 Pick:11
Wentz, CarsonRound:11 Pick:04
Roethlisberger, BenRound:11 Pick:06
Winston, JameisRound:11 Pick:06
Cousins, KirkRound:12 Pick:05
Murray, KylerRound:12 Pick:06
Rivers, PhilipRound:12 Pick:07
Jackson, LamarRound:12 Pick:08
Allen, JoshRound:12 Pick:11
Trubisky, MitchellRound:12 Pick:12
Brady, TomRound:13 Pick:03
Prescott, DakRound:13 Pick:03
Garoppolo, JimmyRound:13 Pick:07

If I am now in the 10th round and these are the QB’s left, I would go Goff and Wentz back to back. Obviously we will have to see how things play out Pre-Season, but you can see why I wait every year, stack my team and win championships!
