Five years ago, college football in video game form was taken from us when EA announced the end of the NCAA Football series. Today, our long, national nightmare is over (sort of). With the release of Doug Flutie’s Maximum Football, we can finally go back to playing the game we love… sort of.

Why Should You Care?

You probably watched that video and thought, “Kevin, none of those teams are the actual teams,” and you would be correct. Maximum Football is not associated with the NCAA in any capacity. What the game does offer is the college rule set (as well as “US Pro” and Canadian football, if you’re into that), and extensive customization options.

The customization options are what make this game incredible. Don’t like the “Boston Catholic Knights” or the “Tuscaloosa Stampede”? Change it. You can customize every single team in this game and create your own college football universe. You can even customize the logo of a team using the logo editor. As awesome as this is, there is something even better about this game.

The Real Reason We All Should be Excited

Two words: dynasty mode. I miss the days of recruiting prospects, improving your schools prestige, and guiding your team to a Natty victory. If you’re like me, then Doug Flutie’s Maximum Football appears to be for you. A deep dynasty mode is what I have been missing from my life, and this game looks like it wants to fill that void.

Even better, you can edit any player in the game and change their ratings, their position, and their equipment to create the experience you want. What makes the dynasty mode even better is the realism. Doug Flutie’s Maximum Football features officially licensed brand partnerships with Wilson Sporting Goods, Xenith, Phenom Elite, and Mokom Gloves. This will only add to the idea that you are creating this world where your team competes. As incredible and deep as I am making this game sound, are there any drawbacks?

Is Doug Flutie’s Maximum Football the Perfect Game?

I have not played the game yet, and will not be giving a full fledged review at this time. While there are new player models and animations, the game still does not look as good as a game like Madden does. However, it would be ridiculous to expect it to. Madden is a AAA game, and has endless resources to put out good content (which they don’t do). Doug Flutie’s Maximum Football has three developers, only one of which is full time. Doesn’t look so bad now, does it?

Even more amazing is that they plan on releasing updates to the game after release, mainly focusing on general improvements and releases. As time goes on, expect the game to only get better. I cannot wait to get my hands on this game and experience the Maximum Football myself, and dominating with the Tuscaloosa Stampede.
