Yesterday was the season opener for college women’s basketball. It looks like the ASU Sun Devils came to show out. They were up against the Air Force Falcons and they sent them home packing with a win of 87-56. Although starting guard Robbi Ryan was out with an injury. Jamie Ruden, the starting forward managed to put up 14 points and 5 rebounds while her teammate Jayde Van Hyfte scored 12 points and 2 rebounds.

All of the women on the team managed to either score or rebound to help achieve their first win. Senior forward Ja’ Tavia Tapley, a transfer from USC scored 8 rebounds and 11 points in her 20 minutes from action out on the court.

Head coach Charli Turner Throne warned us of how good the team dynamics would be this year. “I was really pleased,” Turner Thorne said. “It was a great team win. We’ve got a lot of pieces, it’s kind of continuing to put them together.” It seems as though if they stay focused and not get too relaxed, they’ll have a good run this season.

Entering the first quarter, the sun devils closed it out with an 11-0 run putting them in a 22-11 lead. The Falcons came close in the second half by being within four points. But the Sun Devils put an end to that with a 7-0 run putting them at 40-29 at the close of the half.

Even though the Air Force Falcons had a tough run, they still managed to have some lead players touch the scoreboard with some good numbers. Starting freshman guard Kamri Heath put up 16 points, 2 assists and 1 rebound. Conroe, another starting guard got the Falcons scored 12 points and 8 rebounds. They shot 32 percent from the field goal while the ASU Sun Devils shot 54 percent. All in all, if the falcons want to see some wins this season. They need to stop shooting from just anywhere on the court. They should try to put up some more meaningful shots as well as slow down with the turnovers. Fewer turnovers would potentially mean more shots for them which would lead to more points.

ASU has its second game at home on Sunday up against Army, who played W&M and lost 77-65. Let’s hope the Sun Devils can put up another win on the home court.
