The now (8-1) San Francisco 49ers played host to the divisional rivals and now (8-2) Seattle Seahawks. Hyped up as potentially the game of the year, and it delivered. The Seahawks handed the 49ers their first loss of the 2019 season by a score of 27-24 in overtime. This makes back to back weeks where an undefeated team fell.

Defensive plays changed the game

There were numerous key defensive plays that swung the game in the favor of both teams. Rookie wide receiver DK Metcalf was stripped going into the endzone with what would’ve been a Seattle Score. Later in the game, Wilson was strip sacked and Buckner returned the ball for a 49er touchdown to get the 49ers within 3. However, that wasn’t all. Jimmy Garoppolo had near misses. Trey Flowers missed an interception in the red zone that would have prevented a 49er field goal to level the game at 21. During the Seattle 21 point run, Jadeveon Clowney recovered a Jimmy Garoppolo fumble and returned it for a score.

During the opening drive of overtime, Wilson got the Seahawks well within field goal range. However, an ill timed and rare interception was returned to mid field. this set up a 49er chance to stay undefeated.

And boy was that field goal shanked. It was shanked so bad the ball went into the tunnel to the left.

The Seahawks marched down field to kick the game winning field goal as time expired.

Wilson continues MVP bid

Russell wilson seems to be the consensus favorite to win league MVP. Wilson ended the game with nearly 300 total yards while passing for 70% completion. A win in this game probably widened the gap between second place guy Lamar Jackson. Wilson is only missing an MVP award to cement his status as a probable first ballot Hall of Famer.

Tough road ahead for the 49ers

This match marks the beginning of a tough run of games for San Francisco. They host the Packers in two weeks, followed by matchups in New Orleans and Baltimore. The 49ers also end the season with back to back matchups with Los Angeles (Rams) and Seattle.
