Maria is only a freshman and she is already making an impact on the team and college ball. Opening night was a success for the Bulls and Alvarez. Maria with a solid performance with 11 points, 2 steals, 5 assists, and 3 rebounds. She went 3-8 from the arc and 4-9 from the field. Maria made a splash in the home opener. Alvarez is a future star in the basketball world. I must say you don’t see many Latino athletes in college or professional ball.

What a breath of fresh air Maria is, I am stunned and geeking out a bit seeing a fellow Latina playing collegiate basketball. I instantly became a fan of Maria. The way she presents herself and the team is amazing. Latina pride indeed.

The rest of the USF women’s basketball players played phenomenally. The team dominated the first, third and fourth quarters to sealed the win. As Head Coach Jose Fernandez stated in the post-game conference ” We didn’t play our game in the second quarter”  and he was right. They did not play well in the second quarter. It was tied 17-17 to finish the quarter. However, coach Fernandez stated it was the turnovers that hindered them in the game and in the second quarter.

The rest is history as the Bulls dominated each quarter by a large margin. The 6’0″ Forward Bethy Mununga from Belgium played great last night contributing 11 points, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 assists, and 12 rebounds. She went 5-8 from the field and played 23 minutes for the game. A player who before joining the Bulls was playing junior college basketball. Bethy stated in the post-game conference “she was a bit nervous playing D1 basketball. ”

Mununga has a bright future and she will make a splash this year. In addition to helping her team with rebounds is just a start for Bethy. Look out for her this entire season. Up next for the Bulls is Texas on Friday, 11/8 at home at 7 PM. That is going to be a tough battle.

Let me remind you again that USF Bulls freshman guard Maria Alvarez is a future star.
