The MLB winter meetings were this week filled with free-agent signings and trades. Here are some takeaways from the meetings including some deals.

Pitching was the main need for many teams and most deals seemed to include it. The Nationals re-signed all-star pitcher Stephen Strasburg to a 7- year $245 million dollar contract on Monday. It is one of the richest deals for a pitcher and a good deal for the Nationals to keep someone who helped them win their first World Series.

The Angels traded Zack Cozart to Giants, to free up some salary space. The Yankees have supposedly signed Gerrit Cole to a monster 9 -year deal worth $324 million dollars. A deal that could open up the market and start a new trend of big deals for pitchers.

The trend seemed to be shorter deals to fill needs and depth. For instance, the Phillies signed Didi Gregorius to a $14 million, 1-year deal. Gregorius is a though infielder that could help the Phillies, especially on defense. The White Sox acquired left-handed outfielder Nomar Mazara from Rangers. Those are just a few examples of those types of deals. It seems to go along with the recent trend of smaller deals and teams using their younger players.

More to Come

There were plenty of rumors that went around all week but not much action. Some of the names tossed around were Madison Bumgarner, Anthony Rendon and David Price. Its amazing how many free agents are still left on the market. There is plenty of speculation of who is going where and some rumors that are kind of far out there.

The MLB winter meetings are coming to an end with only a few big deals and plenty of small ones. Hopefully, the market heats up and some exciting deals come up.
