Both football fields and wrestling rings represent battlegrounds! On Sunday night, the Houston Texans faced one their toughest challenges of the season when they hosted the New England Patriots. Prior to the game, linebackers Benardrick McKinney, Tyrell Adams, Zach Cunningham and Peter Kalambayi showed up to NRG Stadium in tactical gear. Although they previously coordinated on their outfits, this week’s choice turned a lot of heads! Most fans on Twitter pawned it off as a joke. Football and wrestling fans like myself started making comparisons to a well-known group in the WWE. One question came to mind – Was the Texans defense inspired by The Shield??
Small History Lesson
For those outside of the Wrestling Community, The Shield consisted of Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose. They dominated the WWE for years! Never backed down from a challenge and took no prisoners! Through thick and thin, their brotherhood always came first!
The Texans had to channel the same mentality going into the game against the best coach/QB duo ever! Houston’s last win against New England dated back to 10 years ago and Bill O’Brien had never tasted victory against the man who he used to work for.
The only other loss for the Patriots this season came from a mobile quarterback out of Baltimore. Enter Deshaun Watson – Another mobile quarterback! He handled his business for the offense while the defense, with the exception of the late fourth-quarter heroics, took care of Brady! The Texans defense made life hell for the G.O.A.T. by taking away one weapon after another. Like The Shield, they defended their yard and took no prisoners!!
The Texans’ defense inspired by The Shield? For this Texans fan, it doesn’t matter where the inspiration came from – WWE, S.W.A.T., or their favorite video games! We got the job done and sent the Pats on their way with a 28-22 loss on their record. I hope the Texans keep the same mentality going forward.
