It’s official. Drew Brees will be back in New Orleans for the 2020 NFL season. As a result, the Saints front office and fan base can rest easy knowing their future Hall of fame quarterback will be directing the offense at least one more time. The career leader in pass yards (77,416) and touchdowns (547) will attempt to once again hoist the Lombardi trophy. After 3 heartbreaking playoff loses the past 3 seasons he’s itching.

3 years, 3 plays and 3 L’s

That’s right. Each loss has come on the final play. This past season they couldn’t get past Kirk Cousins and the Vikings thanks to a touchdown catch by Kyle Rudolph to seal the win. Of course, there was controversy over the catch and Saints affiliates screamed pass interference on the play but to only be disappointed. That play brought back some bad memories from the gut-wrenching loss to the LA Rams in the 2018 postseason.

Anyone who watched the end of that game knows how painful that loss really was. Saints fans are still furious all because of one pass interference penalty that was NOT called. It was blatant and quite ridiculous.

Drew Brees is back but what could have been

No one can really know if Drew Brees gets the Saints in the end zone if the penalty was called. However, there is a solid chance that he would have with that powerful offense. Now we go back to 2017 and probably the worst missed tackle in Saints history. The Minnesota Vikings had the ball on their own 39 with 10 seconds left in the game.

Case Keenum lofted the ball to a leaping Stefon Diggs by the right sideline and as he came down Marcus Williams, the safety for the Saints, completely whiffed on the tackle like he was blindfolded. The result was a 61-yard catch and run for the touchdown, therefore, ending the Saints season.

Was that guy blind?!

Now or never?

Let’s not dwell on the past anymore because Drew Brees is back in NO for 2020. He is hungry for that next title because of recent disappointments. There is one big thing working against Brees and that’s, for example, Father Time. The recently turned 41-year-old quarterback knows his window is closing fast. This may be his last shot at the elusive 2nd title.

If Drew Brees doesn’t get it done this year then there may not be a 2021 season for the aging signal-caller. For right now what matters is Drew Brees is back and it’s not to pad his already a hall of fame stats, it’s to add a second ring to his trophy case.
