Another day, another opportunity to move closer toward their goal of being the dominate force of the AFC. Day two of the NFL Draft was a day that won’t be remembered as a day of kick as moments for the Dolphins. Instead, it was a day that will be looked back on as a day where Dolphins fans will, hopefully, say that was the day Miami got the line of scrimmage figured out. All the brainless dolts out there who cried themselves to death because the Dolphins who haven’t had a real quarterback since the Y2K phenomenon, got their wish for the Dolphins to focus in trench warfare. That’s what Miami did. They focused on protecting their new franchise quarterback while also beefing up defensively.

These picks weren’t fun, they weren’t exciting and they weren’t picks that jump off the page. But, when you’re building your lines, that’s how it’s going to be. You’re not going to see cool highlight tape. You’re going to huge guys moving slowly running into other huge guys. You envision them doing what they’re doing in their highlight tape in a Dolphin’s uniform and you all tingly. I do the same thing and for a while, it feels good.

Do I think the Dolphins’s made, at the very least, some suspect decisions last night? Yes. Yes I do. My main issue was that they didn’t address the running back position. I realize that running backs, typically, don’t matter. Raheem Mostert had 200 yards in the NFC title game and that guy is just a guy. Meanwhile, Saquan, Zeke and McCaffrey all were home for the playoffs.

That being said, with all the draft picks the Dolphins had and currently still have, I thought it be a smart idea and get either Dobbins, Swift or Taylor. I preferred Dobbins and we were so close to getting him. After Miami’s first second round pick at 39, I thought there was no way J.K. Dobbins would be there at 56. The picks kept coming and Dobbins remained. Then, because I hate their guts and no other reason besides that, the Ravens took him at 55 right before Miami. Even in the off-season Baltimore has to beat us. At least it wasn’t by 35+.

Robert Hunt

This guy is a Brian Flores guy in that he’s versatile. That’s pretty much the theme for a Flores ran team. He wants guys that can play multiple positions that can help in many different ways. I’m guessing most coaches want that, but for Flores, versatility is a way of life. Flores probably has one of those couches that can be rearranged into a bed that turns into a waffle maker.

Hunt’s versatility is splendid because he can pretty much anywhere on the offensive line. He’s at his best at guard but I wouldn’t be surprised if they experiment him at tackle at some point. Miami has options all over the place with the personnel they have. It’s hard to pin-down, in April what their line will look like. So, I’m not going to do that.

Hunt comes from Louisiana-Lafayette, which is not a power five school. It’s a small school and I can see where that can be concerning. You automatically think, well how is going to match-up with big-boy competition? Well obviously, Flores thinks he’ll be fine. You know who else thinks he’ll be real good? This guy…

I choose to live in a world where if you get the Brian Baldinger stamp of a approval, I will follow you into the darkness. Therefore, Robert Hunt is my guy and he should be yours. He already knows what his job is and looks forward to doing it. Per the APNEWS,

“It’s fun doing that, and it looks really good,” Hunt said. “You don’t get in trouble for destroying people on the football field, so why not do it, you know? I came into any game with a bully mentality.”

“I’m super excited to get on the field with Tua and all the other guys we already have,” Hunt said. “It’s my job to protect him, and that’s what I’m going to do every day.”

Better be careful with that bully talk but it’s nice to see a guy eager to destroy. I wish I had more of a destroying mentality. That seems like fun , at times.

Raekwon Davis

If three years ago you had the Dolphins having two guys on defense named Raekwon, you’re some sort of sorcerer. Miami selected Davis with their #56 pick. Davis is a real need guy. Currently, the Dolphins are thin at defensive tackle Davis fills that need.

The book on Raekwon Davis was that in his first real season at Alabama he had 10 TFLs and 8.5 sacks. Since then, he’s had a total of 8.5 TFLs and only 2 sacks. Ummmm, what the hell happened? I have no idea but hopefully Flores knows how to get Davis back to his 2017 production.

Not sure about you but I get a real Jordan Phillips vibe from Davis. Not that he’s going to have dumb Twitter tirades where he shows how good he’s doing post Miami though he never played like that while he was a Dolphin. But more of a show a flash here and there but never is consistent kind of vibe. I hope I’m wrong.

Never forget, Raekwon Davis did get a sack a week after getting shot. I hope the motivation of surviving a near death experience isn’t what makes Davis play better because if it is, then Miami will have a problem.

Brandon Jones

I know nothing on this guy besides what I’ve read and researched since the pick. Everyone at the combine was raving about how smart this guys is. I’m all for smart football players and I’m all for people who do this for a living saying that Jones is smart.

Jones is another versatile guy who plays safety, slot corner and all over the place in the secondary. Miami has created a very stout secondary with everyone that they’ve brought in. I said yesterday, after Miami drafted Noah Igbinoghene, that they’re developing a culture where they can bring in anyone and have that guy over achieve. That’s what the great defenses do and that’s what Miami is trying to have.

Day 3

Day three of draft begins in a few hours and the Dolphins have 9 picks. That’s a ton of picks that I wish they packaged into better earlier picks. They didn’t and we just have to deal with it. There’s a lot of talk out there that the Dolphins will be adding Leanord Fournette and that was why they didn’t take rookie back. I’m on record with not wanting that to happen but that was when I thought there wasn’t a world where Miami weren’t taking one of the top running backs. Now, I wouldn’t hate bringing in Fournette for a year. You’d rather not head into a season with just Howard, Laird and Gaskin.

Enjoy the rest of the draft because who knows when we will have a sporting event again. Cheers
