I understand we’re all still bummed out after the shitty news yesterday of legendary coach Don Shula passing. Hearing everyone from former players, coaches and whole teams has been nice to hear. In life, the show must go on and that includes NFL franchises. A move that happened this morning is one that I thought would happen months ago and I’m glad it did. Albert Wilson will be playing football for the Miami Dolphins in 2020, whenever the season happens.

Survive and Advance

Many thought Wilson would get cut like Taco Charlton and Charles Harris did last week. But Wilson survived the weekend and will be dawning a Dolphins jersey for the third year in a row. I think it’s a good deal for everyone. It’s good for Wilson because he gets to play for a team that he’s familiar while living in unfamiliar times and the Dolphins get a receiver that when healthy is productive. That’s been the knock on Wilson since coming to Miami. He’s God damn electric when he’s in the lineup. It’s just that he’s not in the lineup at 100% too often.

Wilson, finally, got healthy toward the end of last year. During his healthiest stretch, he had 17 catches for 197 yards. He developed a slight rapport with Fitzpatrick and was making plays. With Parker emerging as a force to be reckoned with, Williams gaining more experience after a productive but cut short rookie campaign, and Gesicki still evolving as a commander over the middle, Wilson is the perfect guy to navigate the slot. He’s only 27 and still has a quick first step, something that is very important in converting short third downs.

The Core

The receiving corps that the Dolphins will be going with has me feeling all types of things. Given that I feel that the offensive line can’t be worse than last year, the Dolphins have an above-average chance to be a Juggernaut. Not a figurative Juggernaut but the actual Juggernaut. Not the Vinny Jones terrible one but more like the ’90s X-Men cartoon one. That’s a scary thing. There’s size all over the place in the Dolphins receiver room and Wilson provides the sizzle with his ability to take a four-yard pass the distance.

Who knows, maybe Wilson puts up a solid year and the Dolphins try to keep him after this year. I’d be all for it, but I wouldn’t count on it. This will probably be Wilson’s last year in Miami and that’s a bit of a shame. I wish the Dolphins were firing on all cylinders during his time here and that he was fully healthy. It would have been interesting to see where he could have taken his game. Let’s just focus on the fact that Albert Wilson will be playing ball in Miami this year.
