Trevor Lawrence will more than likely enter the 2021 NFL Draft, and he’s getting compared to other generational QB prospects like John Elway, Peyton Manning, and Andrew Luck. I’ll let Mel Kiper and Todd McShay fill their air time with those comparisons. Personally, I think we need to go back to the first comparison that we all had: Ronnie “Sunshine” Bass (referred to as Sunshine from here on out). Who’s actually the better player? More importantly, who’s got the better hair? Let’s take a look.

Throwing Ability

YouTube player

What an introduction. What a toss. He proved that he can throw into tight windows by hitting Gerry Bertier while he is in the middle of the team as they were walking away. Also, there wasn’t much of a wind-up, yet he still got the ball there. That’s natural arm talent. But… T.C. Williams ran the veer. There’s just wasn’t enough opportunity throwing the ball for us to see what he could really do.

On the other hand, we have plenty of tape and stats on Trevor Lawrence passing the ball. In two years he’s produced 66 touchdowns and over 6,800 yards. On top of that, he’s got the prototypical throwing motion that coaches dream about. The stats and the tape speak for themselves.

Edge: Trevor Lawrence

Trevor Lawrence vs Sunshine: Running Ability

We need to look at the whole picture here. Sunshine REALLY STRUGGLED to make the pitch, but with motivation from Coach Boone, he finally gained belief in himself. From that point on, the offense was running all over the field. I couldn’t find his statistics, but I’m sure they were more than alright.

Trevor Lawrence didn’t produce much on the ground during his freshman season, but he really showed us just how athletic and effective he can be in his second year. Over 500 yards and 9 touchdowns is extremely impressive for what most people consider a prototypical pocket passer.

Edge: Sunshine, by a hair

Blocking Ability

We don’t really need to dig deep on this one. I’m sure Trevor Lawrence is just fine as a blocking QB, but…

“Fake 23 Blast with a Backside George Reverse” is the only tape we need. Sunshine lays down two crucial blocks without missing a beat, leading the way for Rev to take in the final score.

Edge: Sunshine by a million

Trevor Lawrence vs Sunshine: Hair

The defining characteristics of both players. I had to reach out to a special committee consisting of my wife and sister-in-law on this one. Both were pretty definitive about picking Sunshine. “Not even close” was a phrase thrown around. I tried to show them a picture of Sunshine before his hair cut, and he still got the nod. Sorry, Trevor.

Edge: Sunshine, apparently by a quite a bit
