The Colorado Rockies are preparing for what could be a crazy 2020 season, the 2020 season outlook looks hopeful. Even though many have the Rockies already out of the race here are some reasons they could emerge as a contender.
Indeed, the Rockies are looking forward to the 2020 season despite the unforeseen circumstances and long shut down. On paper, the Rockies’ overall team may not look as good as the Dodgers. That said, this is a good team that should not be overlooked because they have a strong lineup and a few talented pitchers.
This Rockies team has shown the potential to make the playoffs in two of the last three seasons. After a disappointing 2019, they will be coming into the new season with something to prove. The 2020 Rockies are made up of a dangerous lineup, young rotation, and above-average defense.
Season Outlook
This team features an exciting core group of players including Nolan Arenado, Trevor Story, and Charlie Blackmon, all-stars last season. This looks to be the top of line up who could cause opponents a lot of problems. Then factor in Matt Kemp to a one year deal. He could help in the role of Designated Hitter with Ian Desmond opting out. Kemp looks to add more power to his already potent lineup.
Colorado has some young players that they are excited about Josh Fuentes looks to be a factor at first base and he has a lot of pop in his bat. Fuentes is the cousin of Nolan Arenado who has become a highly thought of prospect for the Rockies. Additionally, Catcher Tony Wolters and Outfielder Raimel Tapia look to play bigger roles this year. A secret weapon for the Rockies could be utility player Garret Hampson who plays many positions.
Pitching outlook
Their rotation is filled with young talented pitchers that have been making strides in the last few years. German Marquez looks to be their ace in the rotation with his power arm and consistency. Last year was a breakout season for Jon Gray who looks to continue to build next year. Kyle Freeland is hoping to come back from a 3-9 record with a .673 ERA in 2019. The last two spots in the rotation are still up for grabs.
One of the weaknesses is the bullpen as they have struggled for the last few seasons. Furthermore, they do have Jairo Diaz and Scott Oberg who are reliable for the back innings. It would be nice for the Rockies if Wade Davis can make a comeback. They will piece the rest of the bullpen together as they go along.
Overall, the Colorado Rockies have a good team that at times is overlooked because of their past struggles. There is a chance for them to be the underdog in the 2020 season which would be good for baseball. A storyline to keep an eye on.
