The Opening weekend of MLB 2020 Season is in the books after a long delay. Normally it would not be a big deal but the circumstances of COVID 19 have made it more significant. There are some storylines from the 2020 opening weekend.

There are just sixty games in over two months if they can complete the season as planned. Therefore every game, every series, and every weekend hold just that much more significance. It was nice to see meaningful baseball games again after such a long break. Even though MLB has only played a few games there are takeaways and storylines to watch.

Good Storylines

The Colorado Rockies looked good during the opening week as they took the series from the Rangers and Athletics. The offense is heating up and the pitching has looked better than expected. Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story make Colorado a threat in 2020. It seems that the Padres are another team that has been a nice surprise so far. In the opening weekend, they took three out of four against the Diamondbacks in legit fashion.

Another take away is that the New York Yankees are still the favorites. Giancarlo Stanton is healthy, delivering an impressive two runs and a double in three games. If Stanton can stay healthy then he should have no problems hitting twenty home runs. The Nationals have had a tough time to start the season losing the opening series to the Yankees. Victor Robles is off to a hot start with a home run and doubles in the first six at-bats. He has the potential for a break out season which would help the Nationals.

Bad Starts and Health

The Giants are unlikely to be competitive this season and it showed with their seven errors in their first four games. It will a tough year for the fans. The Orioles are another team that is in rebuild mode as they struggled in their first few games.

Furthermore, the Red Sox have had a bad start to the season with their bad rotation and lack of offense. The storyline is that there are some teams that will struggle this season because there are only sixty games. Their problems will be more prominent with fewer games.

Health and Safety

Those cardboard fans in the stands are kind of cool maybe a little cheesy but fans still can’t attend games under the circumstances. There are concerns about the COVID -19 situation. The Marlins had fourteen players and personnel test positive for the virus causing some canceled games. MLB is trying to figure out how to navigate keeping everyone safe.

The first weekend of the 2020 season was significant because many felt that it would not happen. There were plenty of takeaways and storylines that have already happened. For more sports and entertainment visit Belly Up Sports.
