Weed, Mary Jane, 420, tree, green, pot, ganja. Whatever you call it, the legalization of the recreational use of marijuana is becoming more and more widespread in North America. In the US, states such as Maine, Washington, California, Colorado, and Michigan are among those who have legalized the recreational use of marijuana. Meanwhile, in New York, Florida, Arizona, and others, the allowance is for medical use only. To the North, in October of 2018, Canada became only the second country in the world after Uruguay to legalize the recreational use of weed on a Federal level. Oh, Canada! Am I right?

For many, this begs the question, have places who have legalized weed created a generation of lazy, unmotivated stoners? Because let’s face it, the recreational use of pot comes with a stigma. And why not? On TV we see only stories of people getting into dumb shit when they’re stoned. There’s the episode of How I Met Your Mother where Ted and Marshall wander around the hallways at a concert looking for nachos for Lily. And who can forget That 70s Show? Did the characters even leave the room they smoked in when they were high?

Broaden Your 420 Horizons

If you’re one of those people who automatically equate weed smokers with laziness, (looking at you, Boss Man) it’s time to broaden your 420 horizons. For some people, myself included, THC unlocks parts of their brain that usually only operate on a subconscious level. I do my best work and come up with my most creative problem-solving ideas after a few hits and I’m always scribbling down ideas for articles when I’m high.

I’m a writer, editor, administrator, leader, professional, and someone living with chronic pain. Weed smoking is a lifestyle for me but not one that I couldn’t give up at a moment’s notice. I’m not one of those people that lights up the moment I wake up in the morning. I’m not even someone who smokes everyday. It’s not an addiction. It’s not even a habit. Rather, it’s a choice that I make and don’t make on a day-by-day basis.

The 420 Life

Sharing the general experience of being 420 friendly will be one of the main focuses of this series. Joint, bong, or dry herb vape? They all give a slightly different experience and I’ll spend time breaking that down. Now that recreational use of weed is legal where I live, the opportunity to try different strains has enhanced the experience. I’ll also be reviewing and discussing how my highs differ with various strains and tell you about my favourites.

In the very near future, I’m going to get high and I’ll be teach my roommate how to roll a near perfect joint. His are never packed well enough and end up burning much too fast. Either we’ll laugh uproariously or I’ll want to strangle him. Either way, you’ll get my step by step method all broken down, filter and all.

What would being a weed smoker be without the stupid shit that comes along with it? Sometimes being high is hilarious. Who am I kidding, even during the most productive high, there’s usually an element of hilarity. Some of this series will be just sharing the laughs.

Relationships and Dating

420 relationships

One aspect of my experience being 420 friendly is breaking down the way we approach relationships. Mostly using my own experiences, I’ll break down how we end up in the places we do. You know what I mean. We’ve all been in relationship situations that we just rather would not have been in. Relationships are hard; starting them, being in them, making them work. Maybe what we need sometimes is the ability to see things from a different angle. Right, wrong or just entrtaining, look out for 420 influenced relationship musings.

In an upcoming article, I’ll be sharing an experience I had with a man on an online dating site that had the nerve to call me racist because I politely told him I wasn’t interested. Did I mention I’m a black woman? Yeah.

420 Foodie

Being a foodie is a huge part of this writer’s personality. Being 420 friendly brings a whole new set of experiences to that aspect of my life. I’ll share all my tips and tricks for what to cook and how even when you’re high. Want the secret to boxed macaroni and cheese that tastes as if you made it from scratch? Stick around because there will be step by step instructions in a future post and that’s just for starters.

Also coming soon, the hilarious experience I had with the worst “pastry” I’ve ever eaten. Pastry is in quotes for a reason. Make sure to look out for the article to find out why.

NBA

I’m a huge fan of the NBA and high completely changing my experience of watching a game. It increases my ability to process what is happening on the court. I can see where plays fell apart more easily. More than that, my very unique perspective on all things NBA basketball come into clear relief. The ideas flow freely and agree or disagree, it’s fun to write and fun and hopefully fun to read.

420 Critic

In case you don’t know, watching anything when you’re high is a unique experience. One of my favourite things to do is smoke a lil but and put on a movie or watch a TV show that I’ve seen before. Sometimes a movie that was just okay sober takes on so many more layers. Or I notice things about the visuals that’s I’ve never noticed before. 420 movie and TV reviews will be a big part of this series.

Look out for an ongoing series exploring all the reasons I know that the writers of How I Met Your Mother had to have been big fans of Friends and so much more.

420 Lifestyle

So, come along with me on this ride. Whether you’re an old pro or newly dipping your toes in the 420 pool, Blunt Perspectives will provide insight and ideas into all the aspects of the 420 experience from the viewpoint of this foodie, process nerdy, basketball-loving Jamaican/Canadian woman.

Until next time, get lit.
