Reports have surfaced that the Celtics may have some interest in bringing back guard Rajon Rondo. Boston traded for Rondo in the 2006 NBA draft and he was a key piece of the team that won it all in 2008. Rondo is a free agent and you’d have to think that Boston wants him to be a solid addition to the bench. There are some signs that make us think that it might be reunion season in Boston.

Hollywood Moves On

The Lakers have agreed, in principle, to trade for Dennis Schroder from Oklahoma City. This basically means that Rondo’s time in L.A. is done. The Lakers are looking to bolster their roster and Rondo had a slow season before the pause. He did turn heads in the bubble.

During the regular season, Rondo contributed seven points, three rebounds, and five assists per game. In the playoffs, he averaged eight points, five rebounds, and nine assists on his way to a championship with the Lakers. Rondo saw his role change along with a boost in playing time and he used that to his advantage. His numbers on paper don’t excite you but his performance game after game was the talk of social media. Rondo was even receiving comparisons to his younger self.

Warm Welcome Homecoming

If Rondo were to come back to Boston then it might be with a different role than what he probably had much of last season. Boston has the least experienced roster in the entire league with an average of 2.73 seasons of NBA experience. They also have an average age of about 25 which is one of the youngest rosters in the league. Rondo could see himself serving as a vet leader in the locker room if the fit is right.

The 32-year-old guard has plenty of experience to offer this young group. Rondo has played in 4 conference finals and 3 NBA finals. 2 of those finals were in Boston Rondo was a young player in those finals if he were to come back to Boston, it would complete the cycle where the student becomes the teacher. Rondo’s deep playoff experience could prove to be very beneficial to a young Celtics team that struggled to close out games late in the playoffs. The possibility of Rondo’s return has sparked interest among fans on social media.

All of this sounds exciting. However, until the news breaks, it is all hearsay, and Celtics fans will just have to watch some old highlights to get their fix.
