Welcome back to another Monday! Last week was the first installment of College Football Monday Madness, and as the week came and went, the madness continued. This weekend had a little bit of everything! We had Mormons going to war, elephants taking over bayous, and a duck that flew a little too high. Ease the pain of Monday a little bit by laughing at other’s pain, or at least let us laugh at yours with College Football Monday Madness.
Oh No, Oregon!
This one hurt. At the end of the day I can lean on the fact that I am not an Oregon Ducks fan, but this hurt. I thought Oregon would be good this season. While I didn’t have them making it to the College Football Playoff, I certainly didn’t have them getting washed by Cal.
The Ducks are in a little bit of trouble. It’s interesting, last year after the draft I did a film breakdown of Tua vs Justin Herbert, and who fit more for the Miami Dolphins. Bias aside, I thought the Dolphins got the right guy because of the film Tua had put out. Tua’s film was consistent, he displayed good mechanics in a plethora of games, delivering big-time throw after big-time throw. Herbert on the other hand, his film told a bit of a different story.
I saw what all the scouts saw, the reason why Herbert was being considered as highly ranked as he was. He showed flashes of incredible throws. Throws that, I believe, he was the only one in last years class that could make. In the video, I even went on to say scheme wise both teams got it right. Herbert looked like he should be in a Chargers uniform to me, and Tua a dolphins. So if Herbert could make throws I thought few to no other QB’s could last year, why didn’t I have him ahead of Tua?
The answer to that is simple, consistency. Herbert didn’t put together the same type of film Tua did, because of consistency. The highs were every bit as high as Tua’s. The lows were not much lower than Tua’s either. But, the problem was Tua was operating at a higher level week in and week out. There was a part in the video where I finally asked the question I think back to till this day.
“I’m not sure how much of this is on Justin Herbert, or how much of this is on the Oregon offense just not having the best scheme for him, and not putting him in the best place to succeed.” was what I said while breaking down one of Herbert’s throws. I bring this all up because here we are again. The Oregon offense is not doing well.
Turnovers are killing them, and the offense just looks flat. Herbert’s NFL success is beginning to point the finger at a less than optimal offensive system. Hopefully Cristobal and company can figure it out, because they have a ton of talent.
Mormons vs Mullets
It was the battle no one knew they wanted until they had it. The game was awesome. Both teams fought hard, both on the field and in the scraps. I have to give it to BYU, those Mormons don’t take any crap, and good for them. The benches cleared after Zach Wilson was being tossed around like a rag doll, but in the end Coastal Carolina came out on top.
What didn’t this game have? Down to the wire, a big name QB, and a bit of trash talk? What more could you ask for as a College Football Fan? Zach Wilson had a pedestrian game by his standards! But this game screams, neigh, begs of the beginning of a rivalry.
The Rocky Stop at Rocky Top
Jeremy Pruitt’s tenure at Tennessee thus far has left a lot to be desired. The Vols have been a punching bag this year, and have been for some time now. Florida didn’t seem particularly sorry for them either. Trask is looking better and better every week. Kyle Pitts is going to be one of the most coveted picks in the draft. A big tight end that runs like a receiver is one of the most coveted weapons in football right now. Look at the top offenses in the league, most of them have an athletic tight end that provides instant mismatch for the defense.
Pitts does just that. Here is the scary thing, Pitts has balled this hard without a run game. As a tight end, a run game really helps your cause because it keeps the linebackers eyes honest on play action. If the safety is the one on the tight end, then the safety has to look through the eye candy that is the play action. Sadly Florida has not been able to establish the run game it has in the past this year.
That lack of production hasn’t slowed the offense one bit. To their credit, they have worked their RB’s into the pass game, but this offense is soaring right now. Chin up Florida fans, next year you get a freak running back that will be joining the program who I believe will set the nation on fire.
The ACC has two Titans
I’m not sure if I can bet on Notre Dame in the rematch, but they have been impressive to date. Not that I believed they were in any danger of losing this game, but still. I believe that Notre Dame should stay in the ACC, it just feels right. I know that Notre Dame fans probably have a laundry list of reasons why they shouldn’t and some may be very valid. But Notre Dame should be in a conference, it would help their case in the long run.
Clemson on the other hand, well they are Clemson. The Tigers are in their usual form come this time of year and look like they have their eyes set on the prize. The defense is young, but full of talent. They may not have the depth on the defensive line, but they certainly have every bit of the athlete. This team is going to be scary as they continue to grow. With the Trevor Lawrence, it’s tough to think that the Tigers lose the rematch to Notre Dame, especially knowing the playoffs are on the line.
The Bayou Bengals have turned to the Puddle Kittens
Alabama vs LSU. A game I had looked forward to for a year now. It didn’t disappoint. Well me that is, it didn’t disappoint me. Alabama dominated that game, they remembered the disrespect. Coach O thought that his barely coherent disrespect of the tide players would go unnoticed, but it didn’t.
I believe Coach O said they would beat them in every facet, and every time they see them. Well, Tiger stadium continues to be Bryant Denny Jr., because Bama dominates LSU there. LSU is losing the recruiting battle to Alabama, sure they may have won on an individual player, but the Tides recruiting class is number one in the nation right now with six five stars.
Coach O was arrogant, and he shares a good amount of blame for this loss. I get it, LSU lost a ton of talent to the draft and to opt outs, that is completely valid. But Coach O was still the most arrogant man in College Football this offseason. Only a fool would have believed that Joe Brady had nothing to do with the offense. LSU’s offense has looked stagnant for years with Ensminger, suddenly they get Brady and it’s great.
But Coach O would have you believe it wasn’t Brady, heck he tried to convince the nation that Bo Pelini was better than Dave Aranda. This is the arrogance that I am talking about, Coach O didn’t want to look in the mirror and see what he had last year. Arguably the greatest college team of all time. But they are gone now, his star coordinators are gone, and all that’s left is him. A look in the mirror right now would not reveal a pretty sight.
Ohio State slaughters Michigan State
You know, I am half way tempted to say Michigan State won this game just because they didn’t wear those God-awful uniforms they wore last week. That alone was a win. But alas, they got picked apart. This came to no ones surprise.
A look at Ohio State and it is easy to see why they are a playoff favorite. They have the talent, they have the QB and they are playing great football right now. Most of all, they know how to win. Michigan State was merely a toy for the Buckeyes, as this week they look to take on Michigan in a brutal rivalry. Poor Michigan, this season just keeps going from bad to worse.
