Brett Favre, NFL Hall of Fame quarterback, is one of the vocal leaders of the “Athletes should stick to sports” crowd. He’s also a flaming hypocrite. Brett Favre has urged players to stay out of politics, while he himself can’t seem to stay out of politics. Most recently, Favre commented on the Derek Chauvin conviction during his podcast “Bolling With Favre.”

“I find it hard to believe, and I’m not defending Derek Chauvin in any way, I find it hard to believe, first of all, that he intentionally meant to kill George Floyd,” he said.

He also took time to address comments made during an interview with The Daily Wire where he called kneeling during the anthem “a shame.” Claiming that he wants to “watch all the important parts of the game, not what’s going on outside of the game.”

“I just gave my opinion,” said Favre. “I’m certainly not a racist in spite of what some people might think, and you know, I’m for unity and I just feel like there’s a better way to unify our country. That being said, there’s a lot of things that need to stop.”

Brett Favre’s motto must be “Do as I say, not do as I do.” Maybe he thinks he’s a podcaster instead of an NFL Hall of Fame quarterback. He seems to love giving out advice while not following any of his own. Shockingly not shocking, his comments on convicted murderer Derek Chauvin didn’t sit well as he drew the ire of anyone with common sense. Former NFL wide receiver Steve Smith had some choice words for the NFL legend.

“I have so much respect for the career you had. HOF, awards, etc…. However on this subject, yo Mr. Favre STFU respectfully real talk! Privilege ass!” wrote Steve Smith. Though a bit harsh, overall, Smith is right.

Brett Favre Needs to Get With the Times

Brett Favre’s comments, though old school, weren’t made back during the Civil Rights movement. They were made just in the last few weeks. And like Drew Brees before the 2020 NFL season, Brett Favre needs a reality check. Before the 2020 season began, Drew Brees also stuck his foot in his mouth when talking about kneeling during the anthem. He claimed he “will never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag of the United States of America or our country.”

After receiving widespread criticism and speaking with people like NFL HOFer Shannon Sharpe, he changed his tune, apologized, and worked to rectify his mistake. While it doesn’t appear Shannon Sharpe is in any mood to speak with Brett Favre, someone should offer him some advice anyways. Of course, given the stance Brett Favre has tripled down on, it may be like speaking to a brick wall.

Either way, times have changed, and the days of the athlete sticking to sports are over. If Brett Favre wants to continue to alienate himself from a majority of today’s players, it’s his prerogative. But if he TRULY thinks athletes shouldn’t speak on politics, he should practice what he preaches. Stick to sports Favre, no one wants to hear your political takes.

Growing up in a single-parent household came with its perks and downsides. Perk, I became very close to my mother. The downside, she wasn't a sports watcher. It wasn't until I was 15 years old that I was introduced to the world of sports/sports media. That's when I truly fell in love with it all. And it wasn't the X's and O's that won me over, it was the deep-rooted stories of the business, the athletes, and the ever so changing nature of sports that intrigued me. As a recent college graduate and Communications major, I hope to put my imprint on the sports media world.
