EKU goes bird hunting this weekend! Last Saturday, the Eastern Kentucky Colonels finished off of a week one road victory over West Carolina. EKU now faces a steep in-state test against the ACC’s Louisville Cardinals.

In fact, the last time EKU beat the Cardinals was in 1985, a game also played in Louisville. The more recent matchups between the two schools have been lopsided, including the Cardinals 42-0 win in 2019.

The EKU Defense Needs to Step Up Big for the Colonels

EKU’s defense will need to play big to snare a Cardinal this week

Without question, EKU has hope coming into this weekend. Louisville is coming off a bad 2021 debut, losing 43-24 to Ole Miss. Quarterback Malik Cunningham threw for only 191 yards and one touchdown. However, he did lead the team in rushing with 18 carries for 79 yards and two scores.

In the end, if the Colonels want to win Saturday, the EKU defense that gave up over 400 yards to WCU will have to come prepared to stop Cunningham.

The passing of McKinney will be huge against Louisville

Ultimately, EKU’s quarterback, Parker McKinney, led the offense to 31 points, by passing for 238 yards and one touchdown. Da’Joun Hewitt, the Purdue transfer, had three rushing touchdowns to go with his team leading 78 yards. Hewitt led the team in scoring, but his 3.5 yards per carry will need to improve as EKU goes bird hunting in order to win in Louisville on Saturday.

The Ole Miss offense dominated the Cardinals through the air last week. To prevent that from happening again, Louisville will need to keep the ball away from EKU. On their part, McKinney will lean heavily on Mo Edwards Jr and Matt Wilcox Jr to take advantage of the weak Louisville secondary.

The Colonels give their fans reason to look forward to this weekend’s game

It It has been 36 long years since the Colonels last beat Louisville. However, there is reason for EKU fans to look forward to the game this weekend. Without question, it will be their best chance in quite some time, to sing “Cabin on the Hill” in Louisville.
