Karl-Anthony Towns scored 60 points in a win versus the Spurs. This sets a new record for the Minnesota Timberwolves franchise. This record was broken just three days after Coach Popovich broke a record for himself. Coach Pop became the winningest coach of all-time versus the Jazz on Friday night.

Kevin Garnett, former Timberwolves MVP, just had his #5 risen to the rafters in the Boston Garden yesterday. Somehow these three events all happened within a few days of each other and managed to be intertwined.

Kat is the first center to score 60 points in over two decades. It hasn’t happened since Shaq back in 2000.

Unsurprisingly, the list of centers to score 60 is short and sweet.

Wilt

Shaq

Kat

That’s it, that’s the list. Although I must give some extra credit to Wilt Chamberlain as he’s actually scored 60 or more points 32 times. I hope someday the internet era will get to witness another player like Wilt, but I don’t think it’s possible. If not for his time period, he’d be known as the goat.

Currently, the Timberwolves are the seventh seed in the Western Conference. However, they have been an under-the-radar type of team for just about forever. Really their biggest accomplishment was Kevin Garnett‘s MVP back in 2004. I guess this is something to be hopeful for in terms of Anthony Town’s career.

He is going to go down in the Timberwolves history books for this record. The question is if he will go down in the history books of the NBA like KG. The Timberwolves made the decision to trade Kevin Garnett to the Celtics leading to an NBA championship immediately. Kat already has an impressive career averaging 23 points per game across his first seven years. He is set to become a free agent in 2024. It will be interesting to see if the Timberwolves repeat history.

At this time the Timberwolves have a decent core with Towns, D’Angelo Russell and Anthony Edwards as their big three. If Anthony Edwards can continue to progress, they’ll have something.

Looking Ahead

Without a doubt, they have a tough stretch of games heading into the playoffs. Before the playoffs, they will play the Mavs twice, the Celtics, the Suns, the Bucks, and the Nuggets. This could be a good or bad way to end the year.

Kat’s 60 point performance was a great momentum shift heading into this stretch. They also play the struggling Lakers on Wednesday night.
