Former 20+ year NHL referee Tim Peel shared his insight into the Rangers Filip Chytil overturned goal that set the hockey world on fire. Last night with 3 minutes left in the Rangers and Penguins series-opening Stanley Cup Playoffs game the Rangers 22-year-old Center thought he had scored the game-winner. After a surprisingly quick review, the NHL review team in Toronto overruled the call on the ice and waived off the goal. The game would continue into three overtimes before Evgeni Malkin eventually scored the game-winning goal.

Explanation of the Call

Tim Peel gives his insights on the play and what the refs saw on the ice. He also explains the process of calling Toronto and what the team there looks for when making a call when a player hits the goalie. While I still don’t agree with the no-goal call, he gives a very good explanation as to why it was overturned against the Rangers.

Lindgren Call

He also talks about the Lindgren hit and agreed with the call getting changed to a 2-minute minor. On the replay you can see Lindgren did not make contact with the head, negating the 5-minute major that was originally called. Unfortunately for the Rangers once the call is made, they cannot completely overturn it, the major just turns into a minor penalty.

Trouba Bad Call

This was a bad call. All 18,000 at MSG knew it. Every Rangers fan at home knew it. Even 20-year NHL ref Tim Peel knew it. This is a call where the refs need to swallow their whistle. It is a tick-tack call with a team already on the penalty kill. The Penguins would go on to capitalize on the 5-on-3 to tie the game. The refs would not make a call after this in the game. This was a gift-wrapped 5-on-3 for the Pens, and they took advantage of it.

4 to 1

The Penguins were called for only one penalty in the first period and the Rangers would take advantage and score on the powerplay. The Rangers were called for four penalties. The two calls against Nemeth were fine. He just made two bad plays. The Lindgren hit was just a big hit. It was clean and he made contact with the chest. The Trouba call was awful. Just a bad call and lead to the tying goal. If the Rangers want to even the series back up, then need to stay out of the box.
