The Seattle Seahawks 2022 off-season has been a headscratcher for the Seahawks faithful. After trading away Russell Wilson and unceremoniously cutting Bobby Wagner, all signs pointed toward a total rebuild. Although, that doesn’t appear to be the message the Seahawks are putting out there. Outside of letting go of two of the greatest Seahawks to dawn the uniform, they haven’t made any drastic roster moves. If anything, it appears the Seahawks plan on trying to be competitive this coming season.

The Seahawks quarterback room consists of Drew Lock and Geno Smith as we approach NFL training camp. If you were wondering, the answer is yes. That was incredibly difficult to type out. Anyways, reportedly, Geno Smith is the leader in what is, in my eyes, the saddest quarterback competition I’ve ever witnessed. The Seahawks didn’t select a quarterback in the 2022 NFL draft, citing that they believe Drew Lock was better than any option in the draft. There’s always the possibility they make a late trade for Baker Mayfield, but as of now, the Seahawks appear content with their moribund quarterback room.

On the upside, the Seahawks draft was finally decent. They selected Charles Cross, one of the best tackles in the draft, and got some much-needed help on defense and the offensive line. However, in classic Pete Carroll fashion, he drafted a running back in the second round, making the Seahawks already loaded backfield even more crowded. In fairness to Pete, he probably recognizes that the Seahawk’s best chance to win is by throwing the football as little as possible. So don’t be surprised if we see some throwback 1970s style of football.

In all seriousness…

I think the Seahawks are looking at the bigger picture and are targeting a quarterback in next year’s draft. While I’m still a supporter of trading for Baker Mayfield, they don’t appear to want to take the risk. The rookie contract has become invaluable in a world where quarterbacks are getting $200+ million at signing. The Seahawks are sending the message that they want to be competitive, but that isn’t true. If it were, they would’ve made a flashier move at quarterback. Going into the season with Smith and Lock at the helm either means you’re tanking or have zero clue how to run a team. Honestly, that might not be too far off, given they traded the greatest player in Seahawks history, Russell Wilson.

Nonetheless, despite their solid draft, this is not a good football team. For the Seahawks to have any hope for their immediate future, they must finish with a worse enough record to get a top-two pick. The last thing they need this season is to be just good enough to miss out on a great quarterback prospect. If the Seahawks want to do this right, they should do what Miami did the year before they drafted Tua Tagovailoa. Play hard, establish a culture, win (maybe) two-four games, and get ready for next year.

No matter how you skin this cat, the 2022 season will be tough for fans to stomach, especially starting in week one, when the 12’s host the Denver Broncos and their new starting quarterback, Russell Wilson.

Growing up in a single-parent household came with its perks and downsides. Perk, I became very close to my mother. The downside, she wasn't a sports watcher. It wasn't until I was 15 years old that I was introduced to the world of sports/sports media. That's when I truly fell in love with it all. And it wasn't the X's and O's that won me over, it was the deep-rooted stories of the business, the athletes, and the ever so changing nature of sports that intrigued me. As a recent college graduate and Communications major, I hope to put my imprint on the sports media world.
