Houston’s Jeremy Peña Wins World Series M.V.P.

After a stellar performance throughout his rookie campaign and into the postseason, Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña wins World Series and the M.V.P. award. On Saturday night, Peña became the third rookie to win the award in their first season in the big leagues. The other two players that won the award were Larry Sherry of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1959 and Livan Hernandez with the Florida Marlins in 1997. In Game 6 this past weekend, Peña went 2-4 with a run scored as Houston beat Philadelphia 3-2 to win its first World Series in five seasons. In the series against the Phillies, Peña hit .400, had 1.023 OPS, and led the series with ten hits and fifteen total bases. He recently became the first-ever shortstop to win a Gold Glove in his rookie season.

Peña 2022 Season Recap

Jeremy Peña had a season for the ages for only being a rookie. Peña, 25, accomplished what many may say a “Triple-Crown” season in baseball but not what people would think about. I am talking about winning both ALCS and World Series M.V.P. awards along with the title.  He hit .253, 22 HRs, 63 RBIs, scored 77 runs, and added 11 stolen bases during the regular season. During the entire postseason, Peña batted .345 with 1.005 OPS, 20 hits, 4 HRs, and 8 RBIs. Those are impressive numbers for a rookie. Julio Rodriguez of the Seattle Mariners will more than likely win the Rookie Of The Year Award, but Peña should get some votes and be a close second in that campaign. It may take some years before we see another rookie win all these awards and accolades in the same season.
