UFC Vegas 68: UFC Apex; Las Vegas

The UFC’s enigma is not in any danger of being released by Dana White. However, things once again went sideways quickly for “The Black Beast” in another disappointing Derrick Lewis fight. But Derrick Lewis did fall to 5-5 in main event slots and 26-11 1 no contest overall after meekly and quickly tapping out to an arm-triangle by Sergey Spivak.

Lewis looked to engage with the 28-year old Moldovian. But quickly found himself being hip tossed to the mat. And the ground game of Spivak took over from there. From scarf-hold to back control to mount. All while landing ground-and-pound; albeit nothing causing damage.

And every time Lewis made an attempt to make it back to his feet, he was dragged back down. Spivak seeing an opportunity to lock in an arm-triangle, took it. And that’s when without fighting out at 3:05 of the opening round Lewis tapped out. Now sliding to a three-fight losing streak, and 1-4 in his last five.

Another Disappointing Derrick Lewis Fight Jumps Up Another Fighter

Yes Lewis is loved by all for his jovial attitude. But the fighter who has the most knockouts in UFC history at 13, And the second-most wins in division history at 17, still seems to be missing something. It might be time to switch to a new home again. Perhaps to a Fight-Ready with a Henry Cejudo, or joining up with a Trevor Wittman, or an ATT.

Fighting someone a lot lower than you in the rankings has a bigger risk than reward, and once again it’s bitten Lewis. No one knows if the 12th ranked heavyweight will jump Lewis in the rankings, but he will get a big boost. As Spivak said post fight:

“Derrick Lewis is great. He fight two-time for the title. He is a legend. Give me someone top-five. (After toying with Michael Bisping)… Give me Jon Jones”.

Now the winner of Jon Jones and Ciryl Gane already have a dance partner in Stipe Miocic. But the humble “Polar Bear” in his very broken English didn’t know what to say. What would be the perfect fight next however, would be Tom Aspinall. Aspinall has a ton of power (although a lot less than Lewis), and would match up well with Spivak’s well rounded game. Especially since the top of the division is so dangerous.
