Eleven men can play for the NFL on the field at any time. However, these players can be substituted at any time. Meanwhile, only eight men from the AFL can play on the field at anytime. One substitution is only allowed for each quarter unless for those permitted in the rule book.

3. The Scoring

The difference in touchdowns and field goals between the NFL and AFL is mainly in the extra point rules. The AFL allows teams to kick an extra point for field goals, whereas this is not permitted in the NFL. 

Another major difference in scoring is for defense. Defense is an essential component of any football game, intending to prevent the offense from scoring points by tackling opposing players and intercepting passes. Defense players also aim to stop plays before reaching their end zone. 

There is no score for defense in the NFL, unlike with AFL, which is worth two points, making the latter a game of higher scores. This makes AFL teams typically employ a more aggressive style of play to generate turnovers and increase pressure on opposing quarterbacks. On the other hand, NFL teams tend to use a more conservative approach focused on building defense effectively. 

4. Timing

Timing is an essential part of football, as it plays a major role in dictating the pace and flow of the game. In the American Football League (AFL) and National Football League (NFL), timing involves how long each team is allowed to possess the ball and the length of each quarter. 

However, the AFL and NFL have a set amount of time for each quarter, with 12 minutes for the NFL and 15 minutes for the AFL. As such, games are slightly longer in the AFL due to the extra three minutes allotted for each quarter.
