Broderick Jones draft scouting card (reference/term key under scouting notes)

Scouting Notes

  • Throws a very good punch.
  • Feet are quick and nimble, Jones has quite the “pitter-patter”.
  • Great anchor, was a nearly immovable wall, but lacked a powerful leg-drive or push.
  • Arms got chopped down way too often, leading to him losing containment.
  • Struggled to stay in front of defenders when blocking in space.
  • Routinely missed plays or assignments every game.
  • Hands are all over the place.
  • Wasn’t a key blocker or major impact on many plays.

Short Summary

The Broderick Jones hype is quite vexing to me. He has some tools to work with, and he is pretty well-rounded as a prospect. He also comes from the great CFB powerhouse of Georgia. Still, he just wasn’t very impressive, and he didn’t strike me as a top prospect at all, let alone the 2nd best Offensive Tackle in the draft. The only reason I can see buying in is the elite athleticism, but that wasn’t apparent on tape or at the Combine. Aside from running astonishingly fast, he didn’t display burst at the Combine, and struggling with lateral movement in space doesn’t bode well either.

What can misleading are his unreal advanced stats, but I chalk that up to a great Georgia scheme, rather than individual talent. Charting up Offensive Line stats isn’t an exact science, so I wouldn’t lean on those numbers too heavily.

Broderick Jones started only 19 games for the Bulldogs, so it’s possible he is still raw and can blossom into a quality NFL player, especially with his physical traits. However, while I still think he’s worthy of a late-1st or early-2nd round pick, I wouldn’t be licking my chops to get Jones on my team.

Scouting Card Key

  • Age refers to the age of the player come draft night, rounded to the nearest half-age.
  • Percentage numbers in the Player Info and Combine Stats sections – This refers to the percentile that number belongs to among all players at his position, going back nearly a decade.
  • Percentiles in the Advanced Stats portion for cumulative stats are snap-adjusted. In other words, naturally, a player with more snaps will allow more sacks. Therefore, the percentiles are calculated using the snap-adjusted number, rather than the straight-forward total.
  • PBLK Grade – PFF Pass Block Grade.
  • RBLK Grade – PFF Run Block Grade.
  • HitA, HurryA, PressA, SacksA – Hits Allowed, Hurries Allowed, Pressures Allowed, Sacks Allowed.
  • Efficiency – A PFF signature blocking stat.
  • L.Mobility, V.Mobility – Lateral and Vertical mobility.
