Alex Bowman had a birthday yesterday as he turned 30 years old. He also suffered an injury during a sprint car race that will force him to miss time during the NASCAR Cup Series. The video of the crash I’ve embedded below:

Hendrick Motorsports has announced that Josh Berry, who also filled in for Chase Elliott in the #9 car when Elliott broke his leg, will fill in for Bowman as he recovers from his fractured vertebra. Berry in his five races has one top-five, and two top-10 finishes with 10 laps led. Berry gets some more valuable experience in the Cup Series as Hendricks battles injuries in two of their top drivers.

Alex Bowman on the season has been quietly one of the most consistent drivers that the Cup Series has to offer. Despite not getting a win, the #48 has finished inside the top 10 six times. His highest finish was third when he raced at Las Vegas back in March.

This isn’t the first time Bowman has dealt with injury. Last September he suffered a concussion after racing at Texas. Bowman will miss 3-4 weeks with this injury. This week he’ll be out of Hendrick Motorsports’ favorite tracks at Dover International Speedway. In four races at the track, Bowman’s picked up a win and three top-five finishes. He’s still in need of a win and could have picked it up this week if not for the injury.

Bowman will miss these races with the current timetable: Dover, Kansas, Darlington, and the all-star race at North Wilkesboro. The race we’ll be keeping an eye out for him to come back will be the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motorspeedway. Josh Berry steps in, and Alex Bowman will focus on recovery and returning to the #48 car soon.
