For years, the New York Giants have struggled to find a dependable tight end. Daniel Bellinger was a good start, as the fourth-round pick from San Diego State had two touchdowns on 30 receptions. But, heading into the offseason, the position could’ve been improved on. That’s why Joe Schoen did.

On March 13th, 2023, the Giants send a 2023 third-round pick to the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for a top-five tight end in the NFL. More importantly, Darren Waller makes Big Blue dangerous again.

Why Waller Will Make So Much Of A Difference

New York has not had a star tight end since the days of Jeremy Shockey. Since then, guys like Brandon Myers, Daniel Fells, Larry Donnell, and others have filled in the starting spot. Names don’t sound familiar? I don’t blame you.

Fans love big names. Darren Waller is a big name when it comes to this position. After three rough seasons to start his career and off-the-field issues, the Pro Bowler found himself in 2019. Becoming a dependable target for Derek Carr, he recorded 90 receptions for 1145 yards and three touchdowns.

2020 was even better, catching 107 balls for 1196 yards and nine touchdowns. This was enough for him to earn his first spot in the NFL’s Pro Bowl.

Unfortunately, 2021 and 2022 were injury-riddled seasons for the star player. This and another possible reason was why the Raiders made him expendable.

Regardless, the Giants find themselves in a beneficial situation. Waller is healthy now and provides a dependable target for quarterback Daniel Jones. Even with a crowded wide receiver room, there’s no doubt Waller will hover or even lead the team in receptions this season.

His ability to make big plays up the middle of the field or even line up as a wide receiver will do wonders for this Giants’ offense. After all, this team has struggled with chunk plays for quite a while. Also, the attention Waller brings will open up things for guys like Jalin Hyatt and Darius Slayton on the outside.

Imagine 12 personnel with Waller on the field? Chef’s kiss.

As long as he can stay on the field, the Giants found themselves a steal in Waller. For a third-round pick, not bad at all. Darren Waller makes Big Blue dangerous again.
