UFC 289: Rogers Arena: Vancouver, Canda

Well Dana White and the powers that be at the UFC have some big decisions to make now. That’s because two of their belts no longer have a champion attached to them. Although all week long Amanda Nunes was coy about her future. But even before the easy unanimous decision was announced, the choice was made. For five more rounds the lioness plays an opponent, and finishes with a 23-5 record.

Irene Aldana early on got stuck watching Nunes instead of coming forward with the verocity she has shown in the past. She bit on every feint the Nunes made, making her an easy target for powerful jabs and combos. And an array of kicks that chopped away at her lead leg. Aldana staying on the outside got her pieced up. By the end of the fight Aldana’s face was wearing the damage, with hardly a scratch on Nunes.

When the 35-year old Mexican did fire back, with the exception of a counter right hand, nothing effected Nunes. And that happened in the opening round. Aldana did show grit in not crumbling though. With the fight well in hand, the double-champion took the fight to the ground and dominated there as well. Finishing with six-of-13 takedowns, and out significantly striking Aldana by four-times; Nunes’ grinding grappling showed why she’s the GOAT of female MMA.

Telling officially after the 50-44 2x, 50-43 decision; Daniel Cormier:

“Double Champion forever!! Tonight’s the perfect time to retire. Brazilian’s, get your sh*t together and become champions”.

But for now the Lioness, is going to spend time with her growing family.

While The Lioness Plays With Her Future, What Does The UFC Play With

There’s no hiding the fact that as far as female featherweight is concerned, White was never a fan. It became obvious with the busted CYBORG experiment. And continuing to ask bantamweights to blow up seemed futile as well.

But for bantamweight it’s more intriguing. Julianna Pena who was supposed to be the opponent tonight until a broken rib stopped the trilogy sat cageside. Raquel Pennington made weight as the back up fighter. Those two could find their way into a vacant title shot. Simply because everyone else is booked with lower ranked fighters.

But that should be a fun fight since both like to come forward and have almost equal power. With Pena having a slight advantage on the ground. But without the boogie woman of 135, the strap may now get passed around like a hot potato for a while.
