The MLB trade deadline has passed with a flurry of moves throughout the league. There were some notable takeaways highlighted by the Mets selling off the roster and contenders preparing for the postseason.

Shohei Ohtani was thought to be the crown jewel at the deadline, but he will stay put in Los Angeles. There were plenty of buyers and sellers this year separating the haves from the have-nots. The market was booming with the Mets, Braves, Angels, and Cardinals in the middle of the action. Here are some notable takeaways.

The Mets dealt away four players including ace Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander since their high-price season was going nowhere. Scherzer was a part of a blockbuster deal with the Rangers and Verlander will head back to the Astros. It seems that the Mets are trying to get rid of some of their payroll based on the deals that they made.

Some other notable trades were Lucas Giolito from the White Sox to the Angels. This was a good pick-up for the Angels who are trying to make a run. Also, the Cardinals were selling off some valuable pieces as they prepare for the future. Jordan Montgomery was traded to the Rangers and Jordan Hicks went to the Blue Jays. The Rangers were a big buyer this season as they are trying to make a run.

Another takeaway is that the playoff contenders were big buyers during the trade deadline. The Dodgers were making deals to help them get over the hump with the most notable acquisition Lance Lynn. They needed to bolster their pitching which has been a struggle for them. Also, the Nationals sent off upcoming star Jeimer Candelario to the Cubs, The Braves were busy this offseason making moves to help shore up their pitching.

It was a busy trade deadline that saw many stars changing teams with only two months left in the season. The biggest need seemed to be pitching among the contenders and the sellers were looking to the future.
