PFL 7: 2023 Playoffs: Boeing Center At Tech Port; San Antonio, Texas

The PROFESSIONAL FIGHTERS LEAGUE got their 2023 playoffs underway with the 145ers and 205ers. And in the course of a night with some barn burners, there were some upsets and quick stoppages. Although in those, the writing was on the wall.

The Challenger Series alum, Gabriel Braga remained perfect going to 12-0. His countering and feints bothered Chris Wade who made his fifth playoff appearance. Braga got stronger as the fight went on, picking up a split decision win with the cards all over the place.

In the main event; Jesus Pinedo was already behind the eight-ball. Missing weight cost him 20% of his purse, and a point in the fight against number one-seed Bubba Jenkins. Jenkins tried desperately to bring “El Mudo” to the mat. But the Peruvian’s takedown defense was spectacular. And the only two he secured, Pinedo popped back to his feet.

Not only that, but; every time the duo exchanged leather, Pinedo was winning those battles too. By the middle of the second-frame both fighters were exhausted and breathing with open mouths. However, they kept playing rock em sock em robot. On the feet and ground. It was Pinedo attempting submissions as well. Referee KERRY HATLEY brought the doctor in to check Jenkins swelling right eye.

Pinedo’s left hand once again was pinpoint and rocked Jenkins. Which started another flurry along the cage. Finally Hatley saw enough at the 4:40 mark for the TKO win. Bloody and tired Jenkins didn’t like the stoppage, but it was the right call.

Upsets And Quick Stoppages But Can’t Argue Against Them

So moving forward to the featherweight finals, it will be a rematch between Braga and Pinedo. After the fight Pinedo said:

“I don’t do this for the money. I do this for the glory. I’ll beat him in the finals”.

That’s because in a paper-thin split decision he lost to Braga back on April Fools Day. He’s obviously worked hard on his takedown defense, has incredibly fast hands, as well as a low kick attack it’s hard to bet against him. Although; the 25-year old Braga is oozing confidence right now. And he’s walking around with dynamite in both hands.

Over at light heavyweight the finals will be between: JOSH SILVEIRA and IMPA KASANGANAY after he upset Marthin Hamlet.
