UFC Vegas 81: UFC Apex; Las Vegas, Nevada

In his 29th career UFC fight, Edson Barboza continued to prove just what an OG he is. The 37-year old had to survive a pounding from the 11th-ranked Sodiq Yusuff in the opening round. And he did so by the skin of his teeth. Deadly and fast right hands from Yusuff were landing at will. And Barboza was a willing partner, trading shots with the younger fighter. But the cageIQ equaled Yusuff’s fundamental boxing. And that course would reverse itself with Barboza ripping the body.

It might be the case in hindsight that Yusuff kind of punched himself out a bit. Because from round two on, Barboza got more and more confidence. So much so that he swept the next four-rounds on the scorecards giving him the 49-46, 48-46 (2x) unanimous decision win.

The Brazilian who’s future Hall Of Fame status is littered with creative highlight finishes almost got another one in the third-frame. Landing a spinning wheel kick that put Yusuff on ice skates and then going down to the mat. Barboza’s crisp jabs and counters over 100 times to the body slowed Yusuff down dramatically. But it’s the baptism under fire that every fighter needs to take their next leap forward.

Rip The Body Win Again And Again… It’s A Fool Proof Plan

Barboza’s face showed proof of the war he was in. But he out significantly struck “Super” 205-163, and had a three-to-one takedown advantage. While “Junior” may not have a real title run in him, he showed he still has stuff left in the gas tank. Since his move down from lightweight, he’s now 4-3.

Sure he could go after fresh meat. However, he may be looking at getting recent losses back next in the likes of either Bryce Mitchell or Giga Chikadze. But without an actual call-out it’s just speculation. Although, getting losses back is a key for every fighter.
