If the New York Giants’ season couldn’t get any worse, it did. During Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders, quarterback Daniel Jones went down with a non-contact injury. Although he came back for another play, he fell down as soon as he received the snap. He left for the locker room and was ruled out for the rest of the game. Tests were run today, and it’s true. Daniel Jones tore his ACL. Now what?

A (Likely) Unfortunate End To His Giants Career

Jones has received a lot of hate and criticism ever since he was drafted sixth overall in the 2019 NFL Draft. I get it. He hasn’t lived up to that status and has not put up the type of numbers he did during his rookie season.

But, when you have fans reacting to his injury like this, then we have an issue.

This isn’t funny. The man had a torn ACL and tried his best to continue to play.

Jones tried his best to be the guy the Giants and New York could be proud of. He never blamed anyone during the bad times, instead taking all of the criticism he received and trying his best to bounce back the next week.

Do we forget he led the Giants to the playoffs last year? He led the team to a playoff win over the Minnesota Vikings, and many seem to forget that.

Unfortunately, with two neck injuries and this ACL injury, Jones’s time as the starting quarterback may be over. Add in the poor play this year and on multiple occasions in his career, and it’s time to move on.

So, Now What?

In terms of Jones, he’s clearly out for the season. If the Giants do go quarterback in the first round, many think Jones will be cut as soon as possible. However, Jones’s contract will not allow that to happen because of the financial consequences.

It’s more likely Jones will be let go after the 2024 season. But, he will be on the roster next season but as a backup.

For the rest of this season, the Giants are most likely underdogs in every remaining game. Tommy Devito is the starting quarterback for the foreseeable future unless the recently signed Matt Barkley says otherwise.

In the 30-6 loss to the Raiders, Devito threw for 175 yards and a touchdown. However, he did have two interceptions and took a lot more sacks than he should have.

Tyrod Taylor could come back once eligible to return from injured reserve, but there is uncertainty in regards to that. His rib injury could keep him out for the rest of the season.

After optimism that the Giants could make the playoffs again, it’s been a terrible 2023 for Big Blue.

One more point. I know many Giants fans want a new quarterback under center for next year. But, Jones going down like this was not how I wanted his tenure as the starter to end. Unfortunately, it did.

Prayers to Daniel Jones for a speedy recovery.
