Despite wanting to look forward to the NFL Draft the Patriots still have to play football this year. Next Sunday the Patriots will host the LA Chargers at 1:00.

What might’ve been considered a meaningful game back in August has become almost insignificant for the AFC Playoff picture.

The Chargers (4-7) are in a shinier but similar boat as the Patriots. Many NFL fans and experts were expecting the Chargers to be a strong contending team this year. After last night’s loss to the Ravens, the Chargers playoff hopes are not looking very good.

It’s not easy to watch the Patriots and hope for a loss. Especially when they aren’t entertaining. At least the Chargers have had some good games and performances from Keenan Allen. He has been one of my favorite players in the NFL growing up and watching him play is always exciting.

On The Field

On the field, the Patriots have been the worst team in the NFL. Ugly play after ugly play. We have had injury issues to halt our great defense and no clear-cut leader on the offensive side of the ball.

Although most of the blame has fallen on Mac Jones for this poor offense, it is not all his fault. The offense is made up of 11 guys. Although, he definitely deserves the harsh criticism. He has made some bad throws this year, to say the least.

The Draft Pick

What the Patriots do with their first-round draft pick will be the question in mind until it happens.

The Patriots will have to decide on either drafting a new quarterback or giving Mac Jones the chance to play with some new weapons heading into the final year of his rookie contract.

As a rookie, he was a leader on the team. I am hopeful that he will remain the starter in 2024 and turn his career around.

I would love to see the Patriots go after 2 wide receivers in the first round. They only have one first-round pick, so they’d have to make some moves. I think that they should do whatever they can to secure Marvin Harrison Jr with their first pick and then go after Keon Coleman next.

Another player that I like is Malik Washington. I think Washington is comparable to players like Tyreek Hill and Zay Flowers. His size and speed would complement Demario Douglas nicely. He is someone who can make plays.

I am not confident that drafting a quarterback with our first pick would be the safest option. With how this season has gone it would not feel great throwing a rookie quarterback behind the wheel.

The Panthers gave us a good blueprint after drafting Bryce Young 1st overall. They are the second-worst team in the NFL and just fired their head coach.

It is a massive decision for someone to make. Time will tell if that someone is still coach Belichick.
