March Madness and sports in general have always been about the underdog. What makes March, March, is the upsets. Every year there are those teams that no one has ever heard of before, making all the noise.

The Charleston Cougars

Listed as +50000 to win the tournament, the Cougars have a 27-7 overall record and topped off their regular season with a March Madness berth and CAA championship for the second year in a row.

Entering the tournament, the Cougars are riding a 12-game win streak. In terms of their own conference, they are no underdog. The Cougars are 58-11 over the last two seasons.

Reyne Smith is the name to watch for if the Cougars are going to make a run. He is their leader and was named the MVP of the CAA Championship. Smith holds the school record for three-pointers made in a game, with nine.

The Cougars have a well-balanced team. Each starter scored at least 10 points in the Championship game over Stony Brook. I think they are capable of upsetting some more established programs in this year’s tournament.

The Cougars head coach, Pat Kelsey, was awarded the CAA Coach of the Year and has had a great impact on their team over the past three seasons. He has an impressive basketball resume including another Coach Of The Year award in 2021 with the Winthrop Eagles.
