D’Angelo Russell was traded back to the Los Angeles Lakers before last year’s trade deadline. Expectations were that he was going to be the third star on a team with LeBron James and Anthony Davis. This season, he has exceeded them, becoming a dangerous scoring threat and playmaker for a team in dire need of one.

Finding His Groove in L.A.

Despite head coach Darvin Ham receiving a lot of criticism for his coaching decision, one thing is for certain: his fast-paced offense, emphasizing spacing and three-point shooting, perfectly complements Russell’s skillset. He thrives in pick-and-rolls, creating scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates.

Also, playing alongside the G.O.A.T helps too. LeBron James has demonstrably elevated Russell’s game. His on-court leadership and ability to create open looks have allowed Russell to flourish as a scorer and facilitator.

No longer the primary scorer, Russell has embraced his role alongside LeBron. He’s become a more well-rounded player, focusing on efficient shot selection and clutch playmaking.

Sharpened Skills and Increased Efficiency

Russell has worked diligently on his three-point shot, boasting a career-high 42% from beyond the arc so far this season. This newfound consistency makes him a constant threat and opens up driving lanes. Gone are the days of forcing contested shots. Russell is picking his spots wisely, focusing on high-percentage opportunities, and maximizing his scoring efficiency.

Defense was once considered a weakness, but Russell has shown improvement on that end. He’s more engaged on the defensive side, utilizing his athleticism and instincts to disrupt passing lanes and contribute to steals. No wonder he’s almost average one per game in that department.

Should Be Here To Stay

Still just 28 years old, Russell looks like a guy the Lakers can depend on for years to come. He has stepped up in big moments, hitting game-winning shots and leading crucial fourth-quarter rallies. This clutch mentality is a mark of a true star.

The Los Angeles crowd has embraced Russell’s energy and passion. His infectious enthusiasm and highlight-reel plays have made him a fan favorite once again at Crypto.com Arena. Let’s not forget about the chemistry he has with his teammates.

Looking Ahead

D’Angelo Russell has transformed himself with the Lakers this season. He’s no longer just a talented scorer; he’s becoming a well-rounded, efficient, and clutch performer. With LeBron James nearing the twilight of his career, the Lakers are building a strong foundation around Russell. If he continues on this trajectory, D’Angelo Russell could become the next star to lead the Lakers into a new era of championship contention. Speaking too soon? Maybe. But, he’s a different man compared to his first time in purple and gold.
