Over the last few NFL seasons, the MVP discussion and results have been something I have disagreed with the most. Last year, I thought CMC was the most valuable player in the league. He had an incredible season and brought his team to the Super Bowl.
This season he has yet to see the field, showing us fans just how valuable he was to the Niners. They are not the same team without him. He left it all out on the field last year.
In 2021, I disagreed with the MVP voting again. Aaron Rodgers was voted the MVP despite losing to Tom Brady in the regular season and in the playoffs. Rodgers threw for 4,115 yards and 37 touchdowns on the season while Brady threw for 5,316 and 43 touchdowns.
In The Present
This season, I don’t want to see the award misplaced again. There is no doubt to me that through six games Derrick Henry is the MVP of the league. Not only does he have the numbers with over 750 yards and nine touchdowns but he has the big moments to back him up.
One of the biggest problems with MVP voting nowadays is that these moments can be forgotten. The numbers can get in the way of the big-time, difference-making plays.
He has been the difference between wins and losses for the Ravens. His two touchdowns and game-clinching 30-yard rush sealed the game vs the Commanders this week. Against the Bengals, he sealed the game in overtime for the Ravens with a 51-yard rush. Against the Bills, he opened the game with the longest run in Ravens history on his way to 199 rushing yards. Against the Cowboys, in a close game, Henry’s 151 rushing yards were potentially the difference between a win and a loss.
Derrick Henry is not just flirting with the MVP award, he is the clear-cut favorite heading into week seven. He leads the NFL in carries yards and touchdowns. Next week, he will be on primetime facing the Buccaneers for the world to see.
Primetime Matchup
Baker Mayfield is a name not many expected to be in the MVP conversation but he is my runner-up to the award heading into this game, leading all NFL passers with 15 passing touchdowns.
He has been the best all-around quarterback in the NFL in my opinion. However, the Bucs have an intense four-game stretch with Baltimore, Atlanta, Kansas City, and San Fran on the horizon.
Baker will have to keep finding ways to win games if he wants to stay in the race.
