On the latest episode of Sideline Summit, Chris Coulter and Antonio Perez ranked the top point guards and shooting guards in the NBA today! Before we get into some of the rankings, they are based more on the past season and a half. “It’s not about who you were; it’s about who you are right now,” Chris pointed out.
Along with that, the talent at the guard positions has never been as stacked as it is today. You’ll find former all-stars and MVPs on the outside looking in on these lists. The game of basketball has grown to a height we have never seen! Afterwards, we made some mock trades. Which contenders will become a threat and which tanking teams go deeper into their plan? Let’s discuss.
Consensus Top Ten Point Guards
1. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander– The presumable frontrunner for the MVP award has been nothing short of spectacular this season. The NBA’s leading scorer was not a hard choice at number one.
2. Luka Dončić– A slight demotion for the Mavericks star, but it could easily be chalked up to injuries. When healthy, he’s about as good as anyone in the game and certainly in the running for best point guard.
3. Jalen Brunson– After an insane playoff run and another great start to the season, Brunson has certainly solidified himself as one of the three best guards in basketball.
4. LaMelo Ball– Perhaps this is high for a player on a team as unsuccessful as Charlotte, but this is a player ranking. Ball is fourth in scoring and 12th in assists despite injuries to himself and his top teammates.
5. Cade Cunningham– Maybe jumping the gun a bit, but to those who have been watching Cunningham, it’s been all about getting him some shooters around him. The presumable all-star reserve is making his mark in the NBA.
Next five: Trae Young, De’Aaron Fox, Damian Lillard, Steph Curry, James Harden.
Consensus Top Ten Shooting Guards
1. Devin Booker– Booker has been atop the shooting guard throne for some time and nothing has changed. One of the ten best players in the world and an elite scorer.
2. Anthony Edwards– With his performance last year in the playoffs and improved three-point shooting this season, Edwards is closing the gap rapidly between one and two.
3. Donovan Mitchell– One of the most underrated guards in today’s game and still improving. Mitchell has been in these top shooting guard talks for good reason.
4. Jaylen Brown– Maybe not as elite of a scorer as the guys above him, but Brown closes that gap quickly with his elite defense. Oh, and he also won the Finals MVP.
5. Jalen Williams– In just his third year in the league, Williams has made his mark as a top-three player on arguably the best roster in basketball. His scoring poise and feel for the defensive side of the ball have leaped him into elite two-guard territory.
Next five: Kyrie Irving, Zach Lavine, Jalen Green, Derrick White, Austin Reaves.
