It’s no secret that the Jacksonville Jaguars have had a tumultuous season thus far. They’re 2-11, have been blown out in four of their last seven games, and Trevor Lawrence is struggling. Most recently, the Jaguars lost 20-0 to the AFC South-leading Tennesee Titans, where Lawrence threw four interceptions. On top of it all, Urban Meyer’s name has consistently been in the headlines, and it keeps getting worse. Heading into the game at Tennesee, it was leaked that Urban Meyer called his coaching staff “losers” and made them “defend their resumes.”

After their blowout loss to Tennesee, Urban Meyer addressed how to “fix” the team.

While Urban Meyer’s out searching for the leak in the organization, the Jaguars should be searching for a new head coach. I don’t mean after the season either. Shad Khan should fire him right now. The Urban Meyer experiment up to this point has been a catastrophic failure. There’s already turmoil within the team, Trevor Lawrence doesn’t appear to be getting any better, and Urban Meyer is more known for being a distraction than an NFL head coach.

From my perspective, Urban Meyer should’ve been fired in October after he was recorded receiving a lap dance after their loss to Cincinnati. It’s bad enough for your rookie head coach to be caught getting a lap dance from a random woman. It’s another thing when the coach elected to not fly home with the team after a loss so that he could party. There are five rookie head coaches this season, and they all have something in common. They all have losing records, but the only one who abandoned his team so he could vibe with younger women was Urban Meyer.

Bye Bye Urban

Before the season started, I thought the two worst head coaching hires were the Lions and Eagles. Dan Campbell’s meathead style press conferences were very offputting, and Nick Sirianni couldn’t have looked more unsure of himself. But the Lions, despite their 1-11-1 record, seem to love Dan Campbell, and they play hard for him. Meanwhile, with the Eagles, though there have been some reports about players not fully buying into Sirianni, the team’s 6-7. The Texans and Jets are working through their own struggles, but what’s happening in Jacksonville is a nightmare.

James Robinson, one of the Jaguar’s best players, is unhappy with how he’s being used. Trevor Lawrence has looked awful this season, and Urban Meyer was supposed to be a big reason he succeeds. The team seems uninspired, Urban is awful at the podium, and given the rising tensions, the Jaguars need to clean house. Trevor Lawrence is the highest-graded college quarterback since Andrew Luck and John Elway and the number one overall pick in the 2021 draft. The Jaguars owe it to him to give him the best chance to succeed, and Urban Meyer isn’t providing that.

I’m not a fan of firing coaches after one year, but when you know, you know. The Browns fired Freddie Kitchens after a disastrous first year, and the Jaguars should do the same. With head coaching candidates like Brian Daboll and Eric Bienemy available this off-season, there’s no reason to keep Urban Meyer. If there’s any “loser” on the Jaguars coaching staff, it’s the man who did the name-calling.

Growing up in a single-parent household came with its perks and downsides. Perk, I became very close to my mother. The downside, she wasn't a sports watcher. It wasn't until I was 15 years old that I was introduced to the world of sports/sports media. That's when I truly fell in love with it all. And it wasn't the X's and O's that won me over, it was the deep-rooted stories of the business, the athletes, and the ever so changing nature of sports that intrigued me. As a recent college graduate and Communications major, I hope to put my imprint on the sports media world.
