The NL West is one of the toughest divisions in MLB, with many contenders who have questions and needs that may be answered with a trade deadline move.
Since this year there will be expanded playoffs, there may be some teams that will make a move to ensure their spots. It will be a fight to the finish for the National League West contenders. Here are some questions that the National League West contenders are facing as the deadline approaches:
NL West Questions
Do the Diamondbacks need another starter?
If the Diamondbacks are serious about being in the playoffs, they may want to add another starting pitcher as they are facing injuries and a depleted depth. Madison Bumgarner was put on the Injured List with a back issue that could keep him out for a while. It could be a big hit to the rotation, despite his early issues with velocity. Besides, Robbie Ray and Luke Weaver are both struggling to start the season, as they can’t make it past four innings and giving up runs.
Pitching has always been a big part of the Diamondback’s foundation for success in the past. They need More from Ray and Weaver to compete in the NL West. They may think about finding another starter at the deadline, preferably a veteran pitcher with playoff experience.
Do the Dodgers need another starter and bullpen help?
On paper, the Dodgers seemed to be stacked in all positions, except for their rotation which is fragile; Even though Clayton Kershaw is healthy, there are still problems with their starters. Also, the bullpen lacks depth and has trouble with giving up runs in the late innings.
Furthermore, the Dodgers will need to consider making a deal for some pitching, because it is a short season and there are fewer chances for mistakes. They are considered a favorite in the division, but there are some good teams that could take advantage of their weaknesses.
Surprise Contender
What should the Colorado Rockies do about bullpen?
The Rockies have been a big surprise this season, winning four of their first five series. Their rotation has been better than expected and keeping the team in games. Their only real struggle is the bullpen and their recent struggles; they are giving up too many runs, which has either cost them games or made them too close. Additionally, the Rockies do not have a closer, with Scott Oberg and Wade Davis on the Injured List.
For the Rockies to have a chance at the playoffs, their bullpen needs to improve. They probably could use someone who has experience in the late innings and pitching at Coors Field. The Rockies have another depth to make a move if they want to.
The main problem for all the teams seems to be pitching. It will be interesting to see if any of these teams decide to make a move at the trade deadline.
