The MLB trade deadline is only a week away bringing questions and complications due to the short season. Will any big stars be moved? What teams are buyers and sellers? Here is a little preview including players that could be on the trade block and teams to watch.
In years past there would be deadline friendly deals happening already and right up to the last minute. Considering the circumstances and the fact that MLB has expanded the playoff bracket there may not much action. It will be interesting to see who gets traded and what teams are active participants.
Many teams may not be willing to spend money in a season where they are losing millions of dollars. Though some teams may still make some moves to help solidify their chances with small moves for pitching help. It will be interesting to see who will be active and if any star players are on the move.
Players on Trade Block
Even though it’s a short season there will be players on the trade block. Kyle Seager is a third baseman for the Seattle Mariner is expected to be moved because Seattle is not a contender right now. Seager has a .291 batting average and one of the lowest strikeout rates could make him a nice player for a contender. J.T Realmuto catcher for Philadelphia Phillies will be a free agent and could be moved as the team is having a disappointing season.
Lance Lynn who is a starting pitcher for the Texas Rangers could be an option for teams looking for a pitcher. He has a 1.37 ERA in his first six starts and he is under club control for $8 million through 2021. He would be a good option for many teams because there is not that much risk. Indian’s pitcher Mike Clevinger could be a controversial option considering what he did.
Buyers and Sellers
There will be some definite sellers such as the Royals, Red Sox, Mariners, and Angels who are in a bad place. Therefore they make a trade to free up some money. These teams may be more active this year and they may look to move some players. Some other teams that could be possible sellers are the Giants, Nationals, Reds, and Tigers.
As for teams that are buyers it would leave all the remaining teams. Since there is a sixteen team playoff bracket teams may choose to stay put if they are in contention. It will be interesting to see what happens because there will be a limited supply and some hesitation.
It seems only fitting that in an odd season that the trade deadline would be different too. Therefore, it could have effects for many years to come. There are some that may not do what they would have if it were a normal season. For all sports and entertainment needs please keep visiting Belly Up Sports.
