A salary cap needs to be put in by MLB following the 2021 season. After seeing only certain teams being able to afford big players at the Trade Deadline. It is evident a change needs to be made to help make the league more competitive. Here is why MLB needs to consider putting in a salary cap.
Baseball needs a hard salary cap and salary floor to protect all teams. It could make for more exciting free-agent markets because more teams will have more competitive rosters. Right now, there is no salary cap in MLB. Therefore, it provides an unfair advantage for big market teams like the Boston Red Sox, LA Dodgers, and New York Yankees. Which has been evident during the deals being made in trade deadline.
Salary Cap
Such as baseball needs a hard salary cap and salary floor to protect all teams. It could make for exciting free agencies because more teams could afford and have a chance at these players. In return, there will be more competitive teams each year. At this point, there are no rules regarding money in MLB. Therefore, it provides an unfair advantage for big market teams like Dodgers, Yankees, and Red Sox.
Even though there is a luxury tax for richer teams it has not stopped them from them signing big free agents. The tax is 50% on the dollar but some teams can afford that. Other professional leagues have a salary cap that limits how much a team can spend on players. Teams in MLB with limited financial resources cannot afford top talent. Which puts them at a competitive disadvantage against the richer teams.
Big Market vs Small Market
Realistically, how many teams could compile and afford a rotation like the Dodgers have or an offense like Red Sox. Small market teams have fewer chances of signing big free-agent players. Exactly how MLB, sponsors, and TV networks want it because it brings in more profit. Which is more attractive world Series promotion Los Angeles Dodgers vs New York Yankees or the Colorado Rockies vs Cleveland Indians.
It would create a fair playing field because some of the deals for big free agents are large. That includes multiple years and a lot of money. The small market teams do not have the money to offer that or even trade for players with big salaries at the deadline. If baseball wants to maintain a competitive league through an entire season. Then The league needs to establish some sort of rules. The current CBA expires at the end of the year a salary cap should be considered at least
