There are improvements that the Colorado Rockies can make prior to the 2023 season. Everything from pitching to utility players and even upgraded outfield depth. This is what the Rockies need to do to have a chance next season.
2022 was a season full of youth, stars, injuries, and a struggling bullpen. This offseason could be an opportunity to take a step in the right direction. The Rockies will try to build around last season’s biggest acquisition Kris Bryant. If they can get the 2016 NL MVP back on the field that will make a big difference. Therefore It seems that they plan to push for contention rather than a rebuild.
Pitching Improvements
Pitching is once again a big need for improvement for the Rockies. Improve a starting rotation that needs depth. Even if they get consistency from Kyle Freeland and German Marquez. As well as health and consistency from Antonio Senzatela. There are still some holes that need to fill in the rotation. The Rockies are looking for pitchers that can give them quality starts on a regular basis.
The Rockies’ biggest struggle is the bullpen, and it has been for some time. Last season the bullpen had a lot of leads late in games that cost them games. Daniel Bard was fantastic last year with over 30 saves as their primary closer and they look to build around him. The Rockies also recently added an arm and local product to the bullpen as they signed righty Pierce Johnson to a one-year deal. A good move but it may still not be enough to fill in all the holes they have in the bullpen.
Other Improvements
The infield looks mostly locked in with CJ Cron, Brendan Rodgers, and Ryan McMahon. It seems the shortstop position is still in question though fans would like to see Jose Iglesias return. He was a great defender and surprised many with his offense. Also, the Rockies would like to add some depth to the infield and another utility player would be beneficial.
While pitching is their main Colorado may look to add another outfielder. They are looking for a good defender and someone who hits for power. A realistic target could be Kevin Kiermaier who is considered a reliable centerfielder and will be cost-friendly. The Rockies need to start making the moves as players are already finding homes.
The Colorado Rockies is an interesting team that seems to be stuck in the middle. The improvement of the farm system could allow the Rockies to trade to fill these needs with Major League or Major League-ready talent. Therefore, keep an eye on the Rockies and what they may do.
