MLB rule changes are having a noticeable impact on the game and it’s a good thing. There are shorter games, more offense, and fun defensive plays.
These new rule changes are working as MLB intended with bigger bases, pitch clocks, and shift restrictions. Teams have built their rosters while taking into consideration the rule changes. It looks like baseball again and the fans are certainly enjoying it. Here are how the changes have impacted the game for the best.
MLB Rule Changes Impact
One of the biggest impacts has been the fact that nine-inning games are twenty- eight minutes shorter on average. Two months into the 2023 season and fans already wonder how the game got so slow in the first place. It was hard to watch games drag on for hours when they didn’t have to. The first five innings seem to fly by.
A major rule change is the implementation of a pitch clock. The pitch clock gives the pitcher fifteen seconds to throw the pitch with no base runners and twenty seconds with base runners. It does not just apply to pitchers but batters as well.
Violations are automatic ball against the pitcher or strike for the batter. Also, pitchers are allowed one disengagement per at bat and are allowed to throw over to base twice. This has caused more base stealing because it’s harder for the pitcher to watch the runner. It seems that veteran pitchers are struggling with the pitch clock and disengagements. They are prone to pitch at a slower pace and are strict with a routine.
More Impact
The shift restriction has intrigued the game since there is more offense and base running. Defenders are making more athletic and fun plays that were missing due to the shift. There are more balls in play, more bunts, and overall, more hits. Teams have an average of 4.59 runs which is more than last year. A lot of the offensive numbers have gone up since the changes were implemented.
Also, the bigger bases are having a small impact on the game. Even though it’s only a few inches bigger it has created more room for base runners. The defenders adjust how they defend the bag especially when the runner is sliding in. It has created more action on the base pads which have been missing for a while. There are a lot of fans enjoying the pace of the game and other impacts of new rules.
Many players are coming around to these changes as the season progresses. There are some that excel with them, especially on the offensive side. The younger players have used them because they were implemented in Minor leagues. Of course, there are some growing pains but over time it will become a new normal.
