For the past three seasons, the Chicago Cubs have been one of the most boring teams in baseball. Since Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Willson Contreras, Jon Lester, and Javy Baez all departed; Chicago hasn’t had anyone to take their places. The lack of stars has been partially why the Cubs haven’t played October baseball in a full season since 2018. Having this kind of product on the field as a big market team is shameful and embarrassing. The Chicago Cubs seem to be content with being a boring team with no star power that is unsuccessful.

There Is Nothing Fun About This Team

There is nothing fun about the Chicago Cubs’ current roster. Chicago just might have one of the least intimidating lineups in baseball. Last season, the Cubs offense was the definition of mediocre and only averaged 4.54 runs per game. Worst of all, Chicago had a power outage in 2024 as they hit only 170 homers, and nobody had more than 25. The only teams who hit fewer home runs than the Cubs were the Cardinals, Pirates, Marlins, and Nationals. It also should be noted that no lineup regulars had even 90 RBI.

Chicago’s roster only compiled a total WAR of 33.8 good for eighth in the National League. The average player WAR on the Cubs’ 26-man roster in 2024 was 2.8. Dansby Swanson led the team in WAR with 4.0 but much of that number comes from his defensive prowess. Overall, the current team Chicago has constructed is nowhere close to a contender.

Overall, this team has no star power. Cody Bellinger and Swanson are being paid like stars but aren’t producing like them. Seiya Suzuki has spent more time on the injured list than in the lineup. Trade acquisition Isaac Paredes was an all-star with the Rays, but his numbers declined badly with the Cubs. Chicago’s bullpen blew 26 saves last season and only the White Sox, Red Sox, Pirates, Dodgers, and Cardinals had more. While Shota Imanaga had an all-star season, he must follow last year up with another stellar year in 2025. Nobody should be considered a star after just one great year.

Nobody Has Replaced The 2016 Core

Since most of the Cubs’ 2016 championship team left, they’ve done nothing to replace them. Stars are what ultimately make the team not only fun to watch but get them to the postseason. The Cubs are delusional to think that a roster with no stars on it will get them another World Series title. The North Siders seem just fine with putting their fans to sleep with a boring and mediocre team. Heck, the Cubs haven’t had anybody hit over 100 RBI since Rizzo and Baez did it in 2018!

Having No Stars Won’t Win Chicago Another Championship

For the past three seasons, the Chicago Cubs have been content with having boring and mediocre teams. The Cubs think that a 26-man roster filled with no stars will lead them to World Series glory. However, if they’ve been watching the postseason during their current October drought, Chicago would understand that this isn’t possible. Star power is almost required if a team aspires to win a championship. Their refusal to add stars is a reason why they haven’t been to the playoffs in a full year since 2018. Unless the Cubs get serious about signing better players, then the North Side will continue to be treated to unexciting teams that ultimately fail.
