The Colorado Rockies have questions that they need to address before the 2022 season. If they want to see success there are some things to address such as roster, outfield battle, and bullpen. Here is what the Rockies can do to contend.
The Rockies have some of the pieces to build a foundation for a contending team. The current roster, free agency, and farm system are be taken into stock. They have a good core of talent mixed with veteran and younger players who have the potential to create a good. This is what has made them such an intriguing team.
Roster and Outfield Questions
The Rockies have questions regarding the lineup and outfield. There will be many factors that Colorado needs to consider when they are deciding the roster. One factor may be CJ Cron who was on a tear at the plate hitting over .400 at the end of last year. He plays good defense at first base and has been a decent hitter. Charlie Blackmon gives the Rockies pop in the lineup and is expected to play right field. Now the Rockies are going to have big decisions of who will fill in the last two spots. They have some young players that they could use.
They also have roster decisions to make regarding young players like Raimel Tapia and Garrett Hampson. Hampson has the versatility so expect to see him play different positions such as second base and left field. Tapia and Hampson could be considered for the open spot in left field and are both very talented. Beyond that, the shortstop position is one of the biggest spots to fill after Trevor Story left for free agency and he will be hard to replace.
Rotation and Bullpen Questions
Colorado has one of the strongest rotations in the NL with a lot of talent, but the bullpen still needs to be addressed. German Marquez, Kyle Freeland, Antonio Senzatela, and Austin Gomber are locks to be starters. They still have to fill in the fifth spot in the rotation and they have some young pitchers in minors but they may not be ready. Therefore after the lockout, the Rockies should consider adding a pitcher whether through trade or free agency.
Though the bullpen might be the biggest question for Colorado to address. Their bullpen has struggled to hold them in games they have a lead-in the past three years. Also, the Rockies need to find a reliable closer because last season there were too many blown saves. These were games that they should have won, and their record would have been better. There are still a few options left on the free-agent market that they should look at,
