MLB storylines to watch this summer include dominating teams, struggling teams, All-Star week, and more. There is plenty of baseball left to play so anything can happen.
It has already been an eventful first half of the 2023 season with drama and stories that excited fans. There are a lot of talented players and teams that are showcasing themselves early on. Here are a few stories fans should watch this summer.
Summer Storylines
Some storylines this summer for MLB are the teams on a surprise hot streak and whether they can maintain that success. After an offseason with no flashy acquisitions, the San Fransico Giants are entertaining and dominant. They have dominated everyone in all aspects of the game while taking over first place in the National League West.
The Atlanta Braves are one of the hottest teams in baseball right now. Their hitters are impossible to get out and they have a 49-home run differential against opponents. They are just rolling in all aspects including pitching. The Boston Red Sox are on a hot streak scoring fifty runs in the last six games. They started off the season slow but they are finding their stride now. It’s the same thing with the Cincinnati Reds recently won their eleventh game in a row.
Meanwhile, there are teams who are struggling right now. Such as the Mets who have played below expectations and are losing most of their games in June. They had a busy offseason that has yet to pay off. The Rockies are also having a rough couple of weeks struggling with starting pitching and injuries. Also, the Diamondbacks who started the season hot are not playing so well with bad pitching and slow offense. Teams like the White Sox and Cardinals are also playing below expectations.
More Summer Storylines
A big summer storyline is the All-Star Week festivities which are only three weeks away taking place July 9-12 in Seattle. The festivities include the draft, home run derby, and All-Star Game. It’s fun to see all the current and future stars on display. The MLB All-Star Game gives the fans a ton of influence on the voting, adding a layer of fun. Shohei Ohtani and Ronald Acuna Jr. led the All-Star votes. Freddie Freeman and Nolan Arenado are leading the charge for the National League.
Another storyline is the 2023 trade deadline which is August 1. So of course, there is already plenty of buzz and rumors flying around the sport. Such as teams like the Rangers and Red Sox wanting to fortify bullpens. The Yankees, Mets, and White Sox expect to be the most active. Mariners, Cardinals, and Diamondbacks could be interesting sellers to pay attention to. Therefore, there should be some big deals to watch as stars move from one team to another.
